I offered an image for discussion, in post 295. Just so I know exactly what image(s) your are referring to, could you specify? I will indeed look again.

OK thanks, I have those. They were the reason I posted 295, but maybe I should do a side-by-side, that is actually a good idea.
In the spirit of complete candor, or possibly laziness, I am going to claim that I would have to look into it more in order to opine. I had thought that a frequent use of the word "halo" in quotes would have drawn someone into the discussion who could have done some of the heavy lifting on this aspect (there really is a surfeit of them out there). In other words, I know enough general theory to be alert, and some relevant experience, but not enough specific experience with JPEG/MPEG so make a declaration with authority. That said, the (concept of and) term ringing is common in many signal processing (and other) problems, and comes to mind quickly when you see stuff like I posted at 295. Is that weaselly enough for you :)
And probably more than one person, too-—either that or he has no life and is an insomniac. Have you ever noticed the hours he keeps?
