As unemployment rises, Uncle Sam has jobs

By Deb Riechmann

Associated Press

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The economic downturn has forced private industry and state and local government to shed jobs, but one major employer in the country is hiring: The federal government.

While the nation's 11 million unemployed and the millions more who fear losing their jobs may feel Washington should streamline too, economists say a strong federal work force is key to economic recovery. Were President Barack Obama to put any of the nearly 2 million federal civil servants out in the street in the middle of the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, the consequences could be dire.

"Federal belt-tightening would worsen the problem right now," said Kevin Hassett, director of economic policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank. "Most economists agree that the federal government is a built-in stabilizer," said Hassett, a former adviser to GOP presidential campaigns.

They love this line: economists say - as if they are a monolith and speak with one voice. The only “conservative” they found was this poor Kevin Hassett, who likely will awake tomorrow morning to a bright, new pink slip.

If I were Hassett I’d tell my boss I was kidnapped by the Pantagraph’s kickboxing assasination team (like the one from Speed Racer with the cool matching black cars). They force a rolled newspaper down my throat and poured a fifth of bourbon into me. After that, boss, I did not know what I was saying.

You know they never use the line Federal belt-loosening to describe spending. Probably because it conjures up too vivid an image of a taxpayer being beaten or raped or both by their government.

While the peons and peasants watch their 401k’s melt, suffer job losses, and see their pensions (to those who still had them) go bankrupt, it’s sure nice to know that Federal civil servants have such security.

And to makes things better, the peons and peasants (taxpayers) will be supporting civil servant’s bennies in perpetuity.

Oh, that bring warmth to cockels of my heart.

So, the DOD is Job safe ? (Dept. of Defense)

Obama may be Conflicted . . . after all, History tells us that a Depression can be ended with WAR !!!!

Meanwhile 1982 had a 10.8% un-employment rate....and was NOT called a Depression...we got a ways to go before we approach a “Depressing Depression”.
I almost think the MSM wants it....but then I think the MSM realizes THEY won’t survive a Depression, let alone a 1982 version of a Recession.

I think the current economic crisis would mortally wound them. I am sure they try to use it to have a permanent political dominance. However, I doubt that it would work as it did in 1930's.

So if we all got jobs as pinhead bureaucrats, pushing papers at each other would stimulate the economy.

My father didn’t drop bombs on enough totalitarian heads. And his squadron missed important fascist nests located in the US.
