If you’re in the government, a bad economy is a good thing. W really did bring a “new tone” to Washington.

50 ain’t nuthin. I made up a list of obvious pork on the Michigan wishlist the other day. You might notice that Ann Arbor isn’t on the list anywhere. (apparently still making out their list) 3 seperate “community centers” for Dearborn alone totalling better than 50 million dollars. Lots of “rain gardens, hybrid busses, streetscapes, and wind generators”.

What I find funny is all the proud Obama voters at my job keep asking me (Because I’m the only one of the crew keeping up with this), “When will I be getting a check from the stimulous?”

Yes. I laugh in their faces and tell them that they’re not getting squat from it. If anything, the new policies and actions of Obama will result in their possibly getting only a few unemployment checks, then food stamps.

Then, my final statement is, “Enjoy your pie.”

Correction

"5. $6 billion for university building projects... "

as long as nobody prays in the resulting building.

Didn't read the entire article, but of the list right here, only one item - the polar icebreaking ship - is an actual "thing". Something that people can point at and say "Yep, I bought that with my tax dollars".

Strikes me that if we're going to spend 800-odd billion, that we'd want something more to show for it than NEA grants and polar bear exhibits.

What I don't understand is, don't all these government entities already get a ton of money from the feds? If so, why can't they budget and spend their already allocated funds appropriately?

For example, doesn't the Smithsonian already get funds? How much more do they need and why?

There’s been a big mistake - I read the list a couple of times and didn’t see my name on it.

$650 million for digital TV coupons, including $90 million to educate "vulnerable population"...

What a bunch of baloney. The bureaucracy formed to administer this boondoggle is now just feathering its nest and has no intention of going away after the digital conversion

More coupons were issued than were ever needed in the first place. Based on US census info, two-thirds of the households with TV have cable. These households are not affected by the switch to digital. So we're talking roughly 36 million households that would even need a coupon.

42 million coupons have already been mailed out. Each coupon is good for 2 TV converters. The purported problem is that 13 million coupons expired without being redeemed. So instead of doing the logical thing, just honoring the coupons anyway, these braintrusts want to issue new coupons.

But even if we were to buy that boneheaded logic, it still doesn't explain why an additional $650M is needed. Best I can tell, they're pulling a fast one, calculating this as if the money allocated for the expired, unredeemed coupons has been spent and the new coupons now need funding.

Oh yeah, no doubt the money HAS been spent, but not on cable TV converters.
