With job losses soaring nationwide, Senate Democrats reached agreement with key Republicans Friday night on an economic stimulus measure at the heart of President Barack Obama's plan for reviving the economy.
"The American people want us to work together. They don't want to see us dividing along partisan lines on the most serious crisis confronting our country," said Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, one of two GOP senators who signaled support for the bill on the Senate floor.
There appeared to be some confusion among senators about the final price tag. Some Democratic officials put the cost at $780 billion in tax cuts and new spending combined down from the original $937 billion version that has been the subject of Senate debate for a week. Republicans contend the price tag jumps to $827 billion if you add the cost of amendments that have already passed.

Just say "NO" to drugs!
So can we ask they leave the party Monday?
The liberals have NOT taken over the party. Roughly 5% of republican senators and 0% of representatives will vote for this mess. We need to push to keep those numbers no higher - but 95+% voting right means the PARTY is on track.
We can thank the RNC and the lack of GOP leadership for allowing a corrupt man like Ted Stevens to run and lose the Alaska senate seat. They should have expelled him, or at least tried.
OK, lets leave them and take our money with us.
3 defecting RINO’s is not a “complete takeover of the GOP”
they nullified the good principled people who voted NO
for tonight
To heck with Susan Collins. Maine Freepers, vote her out next chance you get.
With the half-dozen RINO's in the Senate...it's like trying to 'herd cats' to get any solidarity.
With the RINO's, Hussein has a 'cloture-proof' Senate, and complete, absolute control of our government.
We are talking two Republicans — Collins and Specter who negotiated the bill. We had Republicans Senators led by Sen McCain stand on the floor of the Senate declaring this was not bi-partisan as two or possibly three did not make it bi-partisan and then talked about the 11 Dems who voted against it in the House.
We should be proud of our Senators who spoke tonight against this compromise bill they have not even seen and were not privvy to what went on in the meetings. They did a good job including Mel Martinez who talked about GOP ideas were not wanted in any negotiation.
Compromise bill is $828B which is more then the House version.
If you catch my drift.
” “The American people want us to work together. They don’t want to see us dividing along partisan lines on the most serious crisis confronting our country,” said Sen. Susan Collins of Maine...”
No, Senator... The American people want to see fiscal sanity restored to legislative processes. The American people want to see their elected representatives once again represent their constituents ahead of themselves. The American people want this insanity to stop.
The Republicans and the Democrats don’t have to work together, and breaking along party lines should represent breaking along philosophical lines. That was true, once. Not so, today. And your deplorable acquiescence in the Democrat pork-a-palooza further weakens the people’s already waning faith in government.
Ma’am, you are the problem, not the solution.
This is the same way they will pass a new Assault Weapons ban. They only way it will not become law is if it is stopped in the house by blue dog democrats. They have to votes in the Senate.
Print that up, sign it, and send it to her (preferably Fed Ex if you can):-)
