Republicans, House Democrat wary of stimulus bill (Senate version sucks)

Republicans, House Democrat wary of stimulus bill
ASSOCIATED PRESS
Sunday, February 8, 2009

Republican congressional leaders and a key House Democrat voiced misgivings -- but for different reasons -- Sunday morning over the Senate version of an economic recovery plan costing more than $800 billion, while a Republican senator said he expects the stimulus package to pass.

Sen. John Ensign of Nevada and Rep. Mike Pence of Indiana, both members of the Republican leadership, complained that the legislation has too much spending and not enough tax cuts.

A top House Democrat, Rep. Barney Frank of Massachusetts, says the Senate bill cuts spending necessary to protect the jobs of policemen and firefighters. The Senate cut $40 billion in aid to state governments contained in a House version of the legislation.

Sen. John Cornyn, Texas Republican, says he fully expects President Obama's stimulus package to pass the Senate, but he warns that it could damage the U.S. economy in the future.

Mr. Cornyn argued that the stimulus package is loaded down with pet Democratic spending packages and is, in Mr. Cornyn's words, "just spending as far as the eye can see."

A stark critic of Mr. Obama's approach to righting the badly damaged economy, Mr. Cornyn says he believes passage of the $800-plus billion measure with minimal Republican support must be a major disappointment to Mr. Obama. The new president has vowed to take the debilitating partisan heat out of Washington politics.

The Senate is expected to pass its bill on Tuesday. It then has to be reconciled with the House version.

Isn’t the House version worse??? I was talking to a friend of mine and mentioned how they tried or did put in assistance to help an amusement park in the stimulus. My friend said, “Well that will help with jobs won’t it?” Some people will never get it.

You might want to tell your friend that only black, union workers will be getting the jobs no matter where the jobs are.

Have the Senators received their copy of the Compromise bill to read yet? As of yesterday afternoon, they had still not received a copy.

Sen Cornyn is doing a very good job at sticking up for the taxpayers and look for him to build on Sen Ensign as the head of the NRSC. Glad to see the Senators know enough to pick Senators to head the NRSC that come from the group of about 20 that have been against pork/earmarks back during the Bush Administration until now.

That is a good point. However, even though a friend, not the most intelligent in the World that is for sure.

Some of the Dems will get hammered in the midterm election due to these votes. I think people concerned about our country dem and rep are concerned about the contents of this bill. They are tampering too much with our free market system and the results wont be pretty.

Well, the Senate version did remove money for golf courses at various locations, and one frisbee course. I haven’t heard if the dog parts are still there, though.

I read that they are sending $88 million to Detroit for school building, but Detroit has a declining enrollment and is in the process of closing schools, every year. They have a 21% graduation rate in that city, and 49% adult literacy. So, I don’t think that they are too interested in schools, the money must be going somewhere else.

I call it the PORKULUS NECKULUS...

If it works out like I think it will, the Democrats will be wearing it around their necks for years.

After those statistics that you mentioned, I would hope the money would go somewhere else. lol. Just kidding. But seriously, they need to take the money out for schools anyway. Isn’t that property taxes that pay for schools.

Barney Franks: the Senate bill cuts spending necessary to protect the jobs of policemen and firefighters

Since when were police and firefighters dependent on federal funds for their pay?

Barney was on MTP today trampling on the Constitution by equating increases in national defense spending under the GOP, with the Democrats current “stimulus” package of pork barrel socialism.

I don’t know how schools are funded in Michigan. They are partially funded by property tax in WA. Funding schools, solely through property tax is a major initiative of the NEA, this year. I’ll have to think about that, with the declining property values, and all.

I want to understand the logic of government spending to overcome private spending restraint. The problem is that the private sector is not spending sufficient to maintain a growing economy. The reason is simple. Taxpayers are holding on to their money as a hedge against reduced income.
The government solution? Force the taxpayers to spend money they do not have and would not spend if they did. How does this help? It puts the taxpayers further in debt by providing some short term employment through public projects and further bloating local, state and federal government.
Is it conceivable that any of this can improve the economy? No. It is not even possible. Following the logic of the so called stimulus bill one must ask about the purpose of this vast and extraordinary legislation. It serves only one end, to substantially advance the takeover of the private sector by government.
Turning the economy around is a simple and straight forward process. The solution is to reduce taxes especially on those who pay the largest amount of taxes in order to put more of that money to work in the private sector. In short, to solve the problem the government must get out of the way and let us heal ourselves. The democrat party is forthrightly opposed to this solution. Similarly, much of the republican party is unwilling to trust the people to serve their own best interests.
This legislation and this administration signal the end of the most effective expression of the free enterprise system in human history. From here forward, as Clinton admitted, the cultural war for the soul of America is won by those who would centralize all power and authority in the hands of a ruling class. We must face the fact that Marx has won.
