Read “The Brothers Bulger” by Howie Carr and you’ll get some insight into how the patronage system works.
It’s government jobs to those who do nothing. They will probably pay them if they don’t show up.
It’s an outrage and I would advise fighting tooth and nail.

Where every job must be assignerd and approved by the Head of State, Head of City or Head of Country PERSONALLY and the recipient will loose the appointment for any real or imagined failure in his loyalty to the government official. Example: All jobs in city government in Chicago belong to Mayor Daley!

The end of the two party system, indeed, but the Republicans gave it away. If they had stuck to conservative ideals and Reaganomics and had not abandoned these principles the Democrats couldn’t have stepped in and taken advantage.

Who exactly will reassert the States’ rights? I don’t see it happening. States are already so dependent on the federal government.
I’m not a big Jefferson fan, but in this case he sure got it right.
