Al Qaeda’s deputy leader has accused President Barack Obama of cheating the Arab world by failing to advance Middle East peace talks.
In a new Internet posting, Ayman Al-Zawahri also scoffs at key American allies in the region — the Egyptian president and the Jordanian king — for making peace with Israel. The 25-minute audio message focuses on Obama.
Al-Zawahri says the U.S. president’s Mideast policy is “another cycle in the Crusader and Zionist campaign to enslave and humiliate us.” Al-Zawahri also urged Muslims and Palestinians to wage holy war outside Israel and the Palestinian territories, and praised Muslim militants fighting in Pakistan.
The authenticity of Monday’s message could not be independently confirmed.
U.S. counterterrorism officials say 2009 has turned into the year of homegrown jihad, with the unmasking of the most serious suspected terror plots involving Americans in about five years.
U.S. investigators are still trying to determine what drew five young Americans to travel last month to Pakistan, where local authorities allege they had sought to join extremist groups that have attacked U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan. U.S. investigators have interviewed some of the men, but haven't verified the information Pakistani officials have released on the case.
The surge in alleged terror cases has raised concerns among counterterrorism officials. Some officials say young men have been swayed by the escalating war in Afghanistan and Pakistan, as well as intensifying Internet recruiting of Westerners by extremist groups. At a Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee hearing last month, experts on terrorism cited the recent cases as evidence that the threat of radicalization, long an issue in Europe, has become a major concern in the U.S.

Pakistan: Items seized from Americans with suspected militant links

Pakistani police on Monday seized luggage and a mobile phone from a hotel where three of five Americans arrested on suspicion of militant links had stayed, while a court ruled the men cannot be deported until judges review the case.
Police allege the young Americans intended to join militants in the northwestern tribal areas and then travel to Afghanistan before they were arrested last week. The case has fanned fears that Americans and other foreigners are heading to Pakistan to link up with Al-Qaeda and other militant groups. Police searched the Saddam Hotel in Karachi, the country's financial capital, where some of the men stayed on 30 November after travelling from the United States.
Police official Abdullah Sheikh said police had found five travel bags containing clothes, a mobile phone and a book. Hotel manager Mohammed Farooq Khan said the three had left the hotel without informing management after staying one night.

A lethal cargo of rocket launchers, grenades and other weapons seized in Thailand at the weekend may be just a glimpse of what US and UN investigators say is a global North Korean illegal arms smuggling network used to finance its proscribed nuclear weapons programme.
Authorities in Bangkok said today it was unclear where the plane carrying the 35-tonnes of arms, an Ilyushin IL-76 registered in Georgia, was heading. But suspicion immediately fell on Iran, the destination of a previous illegal weapons shipment impounded in the United Arab Emirates in July. Panitan Wattanayagorn, a Thai government spokesman, said the plane had initially planned to refuel in Sri Lanka. For unknown reasons, the crew asked to make an emergency landing in Bangkok on Friday. Sri Lanka denied any knowledge of the arms shipment. There was also speculation in Bangkok that it was destined for Pakistan or Afghanistan.
Thai officials, who detained four crewmen from Kazakhstan and one from Belarus, said they acted on tip-offs from US and other unnamed intelligence agencies that the plane was carrying North Korean-made weapons in contravention of a UN security council ban on arms exports. The ban was strengthened in June, after North Korea's isolated regime test-fired ballistic missiles and detonated a nuclear bomb.
The cargo, declared in the plane's manifest as oil-drilling equipment, was said to include rocket-propelled grenades, missile and rocket launchers, missile tubes, surface-to-air missile launchers, spare parts and other heavy weapons.

Six suspected members of a passport forgery gang have been arrested for allegedly trafficking in stolen passports and forging new identities to help international terrorists and criminals.
The Department of Special Investigation says one suspect, identified as Orawan Limprasert, 31, was arrested on Wednesday allegedly with 40 sets of forged documents which were used to forge British passports. An extended investigation led to the arrest of five others - two Thai nationals identified as Wilaiporn Nilnabkaew, 28, and Naowarat Kiyani 43, and three foreigners - Pakistani Asad Zaid Kiyani, a man from Burma's ethnic Rohingya minority identified as Awae, and a suspected member of the Tamil Tiger separatists in Sri Lanka, identified as Ponnudurai.
Seized were more than 300 fake passports from France, Britain and Belgium along with several other forged official documents.

Dallas agents ground helicopter believed to be on way to Iran

Federal agents in Dallas have grounded a helicopter that they say Italian aircraft brokers were planning to ship from North Texas to Iran in violation of U.S. trade sanctions.
The fate of the $8 million chopper, sitting in a Bell hangar in Arlington, is in limbo while federal agents untangle an international web of circumstances that has already resulted in two other U.S.-manufactured helicopters entering Iran. Agents believe that the aircraft are being used for civilian purposes – to ferry offshore oil workers around – but at least one of them is equipped with sensitive night vision and autopilot capabilities, which are subject to strict U.S. controls.
Both helicopters were bought from a Mexican company and made pit stops in North Texas before heading to Italy, then Iran, documents show.

The NEFA Foundation has the transcript of a jihadi magazine interview with former Taliban Deputy Justice Minister Jalaluddin Shinwari, once considered one of the moderate Taliban leaders who would cooperate with the Karzai administration.
Shinwari said, “we welcome Sheikh Usama bin Laden and his Arab brothers and others in Afghanistan, and we defend them in obedience to Allah before anything…The Afghani people are fully ready to provide—for the cause of Allah—two million other martyrs in defense of Sheikh Usama bin Laden and his brothers, because we consider this a pillar in our religion; we cannot [possibly] neglect the Sheikh and his brothers…it is an impossible matter for us.
The love of the Afghani people to Sheikh Usama bin Laden—we believe—is stronger than the love of the Arabian Peninsula to his because he is a Muslim Mujahid.’” He added, “We consider the Sheikh Abu Omar al-Baghdadi and Sheikh Abu Hamza al-Muhajir—may Allah protect those— leaders of Jihad against the crusader occupation to our beloved Iraq.”
The official Taliban media wing has distanced itself from Shinwari: “There was a famous person named Jalal ad-Deen Shinwari whose position was Vise deputy of the Ministry of Justice during the Islamic Emirate government, and not representative of the Amir of Believers. But, today he is not with the mujahideen and he does not work with the Islamic Emirate.”
