Bad economy forcing immigrants to reconsider U.S.
CNN ^ | February 10, 2009 | Thelma Gutierrez and Wayne Drash

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Pedro Pablo slowly folds up his American flag blanket and stuffs it in his duffel bag. With it goes his American dream.

"I left my family and lost four years with them. I will ask them to forgive me," he said.

Pablo is an illegal immigrant from Guatemala who came to the United States to support his wife and five sons back home. When he arrived, construction jobs were plentiful. Over the last year, he says, he's worked three days.

He recently boarded a bus with a one-way ticket home, paid for by the Guatemalan consulate in Los Angeles. "I thought I could get ahead here. I regret coming."

Across the United States, tens of thousands of immigrants -- those here legally and illegally -- are facing a similar dilemma: Do they continue to search for jobs in a struggling U.S. economy or return home to an even bleaker economic situation?

Heh. I haven’t the slightest doubt that Obama is making plenty of native born Americans reconsider living in the US.

The media is insane. Once something becomes a STORY, they see it everywhere. There’s no way the recession has been going on long enough for there to be a perceptible effect among immigrants. Especially considering how much worse it likely is in their homeland.

This is a parody. Right?

Every cloud has a silver lining.

What preposterous, nonsensical lies!

Illegal aliens know all about welfare, free ER medical, lawsuits, and "where every lock that's not locked when no one's around".

When the media concoct a falsehood, and spread it around, and then start believing it themselves, the only applicable phase is "group hysteria".

The money sent back home by Mexican immigrants in 2008 fell . . . The remittances dipped 3.6 percent . . .

Big deal. When it's 50 percent I'll be impressed.

None of these people are "immigrants". To be an "immigrant" you must have an immigration visa.

Now, about how the downturn affects the illegal aliens ~ they suffered severely from runs on several banks that then turned into FDIC rescue operations.

If you don't have legal status here your accounts are not insured.

What’s the problem here? Do I sense that the MSM is hurt by the fact that ILLEGAL people are leaving our country? If I am being insensitive by suggesting they illegals not let the ‘door’ hit their asses on the way past the border, then so be it.

Pedro Pablo slowly folds up his American flag blanket

I'm a gringo, and even *I* can recognize a hokey hispanic pseudonym when I see one.

Pablo is an illegal immigrant from Guatemala

Thelma Gutierrez and Wayne Drash please report to the CNN diversity and language reeducation camp. The correct term is undocumented or just immigrant. Differently papered is also acceptable, as long as it is used in a non-ironic sense. < /I wish it was sarcasm>

“None of these people are ‘immigrants’. To be an ‘immigrant’ you must have an immigration visa.”

Not so. Immigrants without visas are still called immigrants, with the adjective “illegal” tacked on.

Over the last year, he says, he's worked three days

Thanks to the American taxpayer, he was able to survive the other 362 days.
