Mexico deploying guards to protect commuter routes for Americans

CIUDAD JUÁREZ, Mexico – As violent crime surges, this border city and international manufacturing center is deploying security forces to create safe commuter routes for U.S. executives and others who work in industrial parks.

Ciudad Juárez is home to 380 maquiladoras, factories where Mexican workers assemble products for foreign companies. Most are U.S.-owned or subsidiaries.

The factories employ more than 230,000 people. So officials created special commuter routes leading to and from industrial parks to protect workers and managers.

"The maquila industry is about 60 percent of the economy. And we know how important it is," Mayor Jesús Reyes Ferris said.

A force of 300 city, state and federal police and soldiers will protect the corridors. The routes lead to and from international bridges traveled daily by U.S. plant managers, engineers and suppliers.

The new strategy is an attempt to quell the fears of border business leaders about a spike in violent crime. There were 1,600 killings in Juárez in 2008 and 153 killings in January, triple last January's figure. Kidnappings for ransom and robberies are rampant, authorities say.

Maquiladoras do not appear to be the main targets of crime, said Manuel Ochoa of El Paso's Economic Development Corp., a city agency that helps U.S. companies set up operations on the border. He estimated that 5,000 managers live in El Paso and work in Juárez plants.

Put an end to NAFTA...and we do not have this problem...

Seems the only ones benefiting from trade with Mexico are the drug cartels...

If that’s the case, we’ve got a few cartel members left on FR.

When your morning commute involves a couple gun trucks, air cover, and a QRF on standby you need to move your plant.

Typically speaking, yes.
Though, if you’re in the armed forces it may be preferable to the alternative.

That’s 230,000 of our people that could be put back to work if these factories come home where they belong.
