Montgomery County announced a strategy Tuesday to strengthen its efforts with federal immigration authorities.
County Executive Isiah Leggett, a Democrat, told the police chief the county will now require officers to give U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement the names of every person arrested for violent crimes and for illegally carrying or transporting handguns.
The decision by the county - considered among the region's most liberal and welcoming to immigrants - comes after a 7.7 percent increase in serious crime last year in the county, some of which police said occurred in neighborhoods where immigrants were perpetrators and victims.
The new policy stops short of illegal-immigration efforts in nearby counties, where officers have been deputized to act as federal immigration agents, but it still raises concern among immigrant advocates.
"Though this might not necessarily be a, quote, 'agreement,' it is cooperation with a federal agency," said Elena Lacayo, of the National Council of La Raza, in the District. "The consequences are still that immigration enforcement does happen at a local level."

I’ll believe it when I see it.
Note how limited it will be.
Yep, Ike’s sanctuary county didn’t work out too well.
Murdered actually. I work in Montgomery County, and Ike is making one heckuva U-turn in policy after several high-profile murders committed by illegal aliens. The libs got religion real fast on this one...
Just crookedest and most liberal.
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
Correctamoundo!
“give U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement the names of every person arrested for violent crimes and for illegally carrying or transporting handguns.
“The new policy stops short of illegal-immigration efforts in nearby counties, where officers have been deputized to act as federal immigration agents, but it still raises concern among immigrant advocates.”
So, how is this really “reporting illegals”?
I mean, seems they’re more worried as usual about “illegal guns” than people streaming in illegally.
All they’re doing is handing a list they normally generate to ICE? Then ICE has to sort through it all to see if they’re illegal? Still sounds like they’re not asking if anyone has a visa.
Exactly.
For the benefit of readers outside the area, Montgomery County directly surrounds DC outside the northwest quadrant's white elite Georgetown and related neighborhoods, and Prince Georges' County surrounds all the old working-class and welfare neighborhoods of DC's northeast and southeast quadrants.
Prince George's County is now Montgomery's primary supplier of illegals. In the 60s, Prince George's County was a haven for European-descended, middle and lower-middle working Americans in safe suburban communities, with DC bus lines traveling out it main arteries. At that time PG had the best-performing schools in the state. Since the 70s Prince George's has been targeted for takeover by real estate redliners and the ACLU to absorb low-income persons of color from DC, spurring the phenomenon of "white flight"; and has for the last 15 years been a sanctuary destination for a gazillion illegals as well. PG is now one of the worst crime areas in the state; while the wealthy lawyers and high-paid gubmit workers followed the real estate redlines up into Montgomery, where the fancy suburbs of Bethesda, Chevy Chase and Rockville enjoy prime commuter train lines. Now Montgomery wants to make the whole County a gated community.
Just another triumph for diversity and the liberal multi-kult, folks! "Educated" elites destroy the economically fragile white working class while allowing a small percentage of persons of color (who are also lawyers and doctors) into their neighborhoods, to show how liberal they are.
What has happened around DC ever since the Civil Rights revolution started dictating population shifts, busing, demographic gerrymandering and real-estate payola is now happening at every level in society, courtesy of liberal class persecution, in which the elites use token groups of disadvantaged people as human shields while discriminating against the working, tax-paying lower middle class, who are demonized as bigots while their communities are forcibly devalued, while the wealthier areas keep prices escalating.
Ethnic data for the DC region as a whole, according to Wikipedia, is as follows:
2006
White : 51.7%
Black : 26.3%
Asian : 8.4%
Hispanic : 11.6%
Mixed and Other : 2.0%
1980
White : 67.8%
Black : 26.0%
Asian : 2.5%
Hispanic : 2.8%
Mixed and Other : 0.9%
According to the delicately-worded data from Rural Policy Research Institute:
African-American population, 2005
Montgomery County: "less than 25%"
Prince Georges County: "more than 50%"
Per capita income, 2004
Montgomery County: "$50,000 or more"[emphasis mine}
Prince Georges County: $30,000 to $39,000
In a search for Hispanic population statistics, I was confounded by the lack of reliable data. First, illegals do not get counted in any systematic fashion. Secondly, many Hispanics classify themselves as "white", obscuring cultural and language differentiators that form the basis of many civil rights lawsuits over utility bills, school instruction, provision of translators in government offices, hospitals, courts and the DMV, etc.
It is also worth noting that PG County appears to be a stopover station on Hispanic illegals' way to the agricultural and Bay fishery counties of Maryland, which are experiencing the most accelerated growth of Hispanic population. Those counties provide low-wage labor on farms and in crab picking or chicken packing factories, etc.
