DNA Connects Rape Suspect To Florida Mall Case

Orlando, Fla. -- Two Orange County rape suspects are in custody, but the case took an even more disturbing twist Thursday afternoon. Detectives said the rape of an 11-year-old girl might not have been the suspects' first.

"Once we put the suspect's DNA into the database, we obtained another hit," Detective Rich Mankewich said Thursday afternoon during a news conference (watch it).

Richard Morales-Marin, 23, is the one they believe did it and he's one of two confessed rapists already in custody. He was formally charged in court Thursday and remains jailed on no bond.

The second suspect, 24-year-old Juan Hernandez-Monzalvo, was taken off suicide watch Thursday and should be in court Friday. Eyewitness News learned late Thursday that he was actually deported to Mexico in late June and at some point since then somehow re-entered the United States.

The other rape did not happen in the abandoned house on Rose Boulevard where investigators say the men raped the 11-year-old girl, but it happened while both men were living there. Investigators are now anxious to see how many cases the two men might be involved in.

"Once we put the suspects' DNA into the system, we obtained another hit. This was a January 2008 case where a girl was at Florida Mall, she was picked up by two Hispanic males in a black car, taken around some buildings at the mall and sexually battered," Detective Rich Mankewich said. "We don't know how many other cases are out there."

That bombshell was dropped Thursday afternoon, just hours after Richard Morales-Marin was denied bond at his first appearance. He will be back in court Friday to face new charges along with co-defendant and roommate Juan Hernandez-Monzalvo, who is not yet implicated in the second rape and missed his first appearance because he was on suicide watch.

"It's really scary. I mean, that's the only thing I can say to have those kind of people so close to you and not even know," former neighbor Hector Garcia told Eyewitness News.

Garcia lives across the street from the house where the 11-year-old girl was raped and regularly saw the two men during the time of the Florida Mall rape a year ago.

Immigration officials say both men are in the country illegally and, if convicted, would have to serve prison sentences before being deported. Garcia wonders how many more crimes the men might be involved in.

"Who knows? It's hard to tell. I hope this is the end of it," he said.

During Thursday afternoon's news conference, Mankewich said that the men have been in Central Florida since January 2008 and were working in construction. He said they may have had a work visa. He said the men at one point while in custody were laughing and joking.

"They're not up there sobbing. It's just like, 'Oh, sorry about what happened.' Why did they do it? They really didn't say. They say they've never done this before and they really can't say why they did it," said Rich Mankewich of the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

As for the suspect's family members, who are believed to also be here illegally, immigration officials have not yet responded to questions about whether they may now face deportation.

As Eyewitness News learns more about the two suspects, there's a new question. Are Morales-Marin and Hernandez-Monzalvo in the United State illegally? Detectives say yes, but the pair lived with Hernandez-Monzalvo's children and wife and she was the one who turned in Morales-Marin.

She told Eyewitness News she never realized her husband Juan was also wanted.

"'Mommy, the police is coming, mommy, the police is coming,'" Eustolea Ortega told Eyewitness News her children said right after she called 911 with the big break Orange County detectives had been waiting for.

Eustolea Ortega called police after she saw the composite sketch several days ago and recognized it as her roommate, 23-year-old Richard Morales-Marin. She didn't know they also wanted her husband, 24-year-old Juan Hernandez-Monzalvo. All three rented the now abandoned home on Rose Boulevard where the rape happened.

"I feel very bad because, of course, if you heard very bad news, it's terrible. So I only was thinking I knew the police would be coming here because I lived over there," Ortega said.

Acting on her tip, deputies came to the Citadel Drive home and went inside to find Morales-Marin's bags packed as if he was getting ready to get out of town. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents detained him and Morales-Marin agreed to give a DNA sample, which the Florida Department of Law Enforcement matched to the victim.

Morales-Marin confessed and told them Hernandez-Muzalvo was also involved. Agents think they are in the country illegally.

Thursday morning, Hernandez-Monzalvo's wife broke down.

"I think about the girl. It's terrible. You can do whatever you want, but not that thing. This is horrible," she said.

Since this is Florida, we will do more than just deport them again.

I changed the headline because it referenced items only locals would understand and FReepers across country would not know importance of, such as "Florida Mall" and certain small towns unknown outside this area, such as "Gotha."

You know, after you kill them they can’t commit the crime again... let them hang by the neck until dead.

Just another cost of doing business for those who abet these crimes by irresponsibly hiring illegals. But in this case the added societal cost is externalized and does not have to show up on the profit and loss statement, but is rather reflected in the balance sheet of the little girl’s growing up years.

Pour gasoline on them and set them on fire. Then deport them.

No, your government is clueless, not to mention they're aiding and abetting an epic violent invasion of our country.

Criminy, you all seem to forget (/s)............Bush sent Rove to La Raza to tell them, US laws would NOT be enforced so that Third World criminals could sneak over the border “to have a better life.”

The two birdbrains actually believed that once corrupt criminals experienced “American freedom”-—they would discard their criminal ways-—and “embrace democracy” and all it stands for (barf and hurl).
