The last time the US got rid of a coin was the half cent in 1857. A half cent back then is worth about ten cents now. Getting rid of it was the equivalent of dumping the penny, nickel and dime now and just using quarters as the smallest value coin. It is long past time to dump the penny.

Actually, the last coin we got rid of was the 20 cent piece (1878). Before that it was the half dime (1873)...
