That crash site is perfectly lined up with one of the runways 5 miles to the SW. And losing altitude is what they had to be doing to land.
The blue diagonal line on the right is the final path of Flight 3407. The 'red flame' symbol is the crash site, and the blue marker at extreme lower left of frame is the airport.
