A Sept. 11 widow who lost her husband in the World Trade Center was among those who perished aboard a commuter flight that crashed into a house in Buffalo, N.Y.

Beverly Eckert of Stamford, Conn., whose husband Sean Rooney died in the 2001 attacks, was one of the 50 victims of the Continental Flight 3407 accident.

Her sister Sue Bourque was at the Buffalo airport awaiting official confirmation that Eckert had been on board. Officials investigating the crash have not yet confirmed Eckert was among the 44 passengers killed Thursday night.

"We know she was on that plane," Bourque told the Buffalo News, "and now she's with him."

Eckert and Rooney were high school sweethearts. She had continued to live in the couple's home in Stamford after he died more than seven years ago.

What can one say? No better evidence that it’s all in God’s hands anyway.

I find it surprising that for the aircraft, the bottom just seemed to drop right out from under it. What was their altitude, around 2300 feet? Oughtn’t there have been time to at least inform the control tower that they were in trouble and losing altitude?

Sean Rooney
Tribute submitted by Beverly Eckert

When Sean laughed - which was often - his shoulders would shake. Even as a toddler, he had an irrepressible chuckle. The ability to see the humorous angle in almost any situation characterized Sean throughout his life. In high school, he was notoriously irreverent. Later, during an early stint in the restaurant business, his wit made a lasting impression on his staff for whom he was both friend and mentor. During his career in insurance, he forged lasting friendships with colleagues and clients alike, who remember that contentious situations were often salvaged by Sean's sense of humor. And his laughter and warmth made each day special for his wife.

Sean was both intelligent and wise, and his input was frequently solicited by friends and family. He was extremely competent, directing his intellectual skills to all manner of challenges, from scientific issues to legal matters to perfecting recipes. While still in his teens, he dismantled and then rebuilt a 1951 MG TD. He was self-taught in home repairs, and each time he moved, he tackled major renovations. It was the home in Connecticut, bought in 1987, where Sean's talents as a carpenter, plumber, electrician and mason were put to spectacular use. The cement steps that led to the front door were poured by Sean; the French doors leading to the patio were installed by him; he built the fireplace mantle in the living room, the kitchen cabinets, the dining room table and the sectional couch frame in the TV room. He laid marble floors in the master bathroom and hardwood floors in the kitchen. His yard was the envy of the neighborhood, shaded with trees he planted, an herb garden he cultivated and a lawn that rose up the hill like a green carpet. Weekends found him golfing, playing tennis, working on projects or roller-blading, followed by shopping for gourmet food items he would prepare later for dinner guests, often cooking outdoors on his beloved Webber grill.

This is how Sean would want to be remembered:

The evening sky has deepened into darkness on a soft summer night. He is sitting on the stone step near the kitchen door, watching the fireflies rise in the backyard over the newly mowed lawn. Friends are expected for dinner. A steak is on the grill, a glass of wine is in his hand and his wife is at his side. They are laughing. He is content.

Or Ann Coulter

Beverly Eckert wasn't one of the "Jersey Girls" who Ann Coulter criticized.

"The Jersey Girls or Jersey Widows is an informal description of four American activist women: Kristen Breitweiser, Patty Casazza, Lorie Van Auken, and Mindy Kleinberg. Each of them, as of September 11, 2001, was a resident of New Jersey and was married to a man who died in the September 11 attacks that day."

____________________________________________________

Defending Ann Coulter From Jersey Girls
by Alan Caruba, 06/09/2006

excerpt...

While promoting her book on television, Coulter made reference to a group of New Jersey women whose husbands were killed in the attack on the World Trade Center because, these “Jersey girls,” having received huge compensations for their loss, then went public blaming President Bush for having failed to anticipate and prevent the 9/11 attacks. The mainstream media made much of them while ignoring some very key factors that undermined their views. Coulter, of course, did not.

Following Coulter’s television appearance, on June 7 the two senators attacked her and her book. Lautenberg said, “Ms. Coulter’s shameless attack on the victims of the worst act of terrorism in American history engenders disgust.” Clinton suggested that “Perhaps her book should have been called ‘Heartless,’” and called Coulter’s comments “a vicious, mean-spirited attack on people whom I’ve known over the last four and a half years to be concerned deeply about the safely and security of our country.”

Noticeably missing from the press reports was any mention of what Coulter actually wrote. “The 9/11 Commission was a scam and a fraud, the sole purpose of which was to cover up the disasters of the Clinton administration and distract the nation’s leaders during wartime. Not only did the Jersey girls claim credit for this Clinton whitewash machine, they spent most of the hearings denouncing the Bush administration for not stopping the 9/11 attacks from the weak position handed it by the Clinton administration.”

The gist of what Kristen Breitweiser, Lorie Van Auken, Mindy Kleinberg, and Patty Casazza claimed was that an August 2001 Presidential Daily Briefing should have alerted Bush to order immediate action to prevent 9/11. Coulter notes in her book that “all the information about bin Laden in the August PDB comes from the nineties. Not one fact in the PDB is more recent than 1999.” This inconvenient fact was rarely, if ever, mentioned by the media.

“Mostly the witches of East Brunswick wanted George Bush to apologize for not being Bill Clinton,” was Coulter’s take on the Jersey girls, but, “The rest of the nation was more interested in knowing why the FBI was prevented from being given intelligence about 9/11 terrorists here in the United States more than a year before the attack…” The answer is that Clinton’s deputy attorney general, Jamie Gorelick, “had specifically prohibited intelligence agents from telling law enforcement agents about suspected terrorists in the country.” And who did the Democrats put on the 9/11 Commission? Jamie Gorelick!

Adding to her criticism of the Jersey girls, Coulter wrote, “Needless to say, the Democrat ratpack gals endorsed John Kerry for president.” A whole lot of partisanship was going on! The June 8 Associated Press rendition of Lautenberg’s and Clinton’s comments contained no balancing statements of support for Coulter except to note at the very end, “Coulter’s new book was Amazon.com’s most popular selection last night.”

Draft the guy who was part of the administration that erected the wall, thus paving the way for 9/11? Brilliant. She was a Jersey Girl, then?

Still, possibly suspect views aside, may she rest in peace.

I’m assuming it has to with ice....the de-icer most likely malfunctioned. This particular plane apparently had a new apparatus that supposingly rids the place of ice with new breakers or soemthing......I’ll be they were made in China.

One of the aviation type talking heads this morning said that an ice problem, at 2300 feet, might have caught them quite by surprise and given them something like 8 seconds to even attempt to regain control.....no time to be telling some tower you've got a spot of bother.

Most recently, Beverly joined forces with the ACLU in December 2008 to challenge the legitimacy of the Guantánamo military commissions and their ability to achieve justice.
