[President] Obama calls stimulus bill a "major milestone;" says it's just the beginning
The Penticton Herald / The Associated Press ^ | February 14, 2009 | David Espo

President Barack Obama, savouring his first major victory in Congress, said Saturday that newly passed $787 billion economic stimulus legislation marks a "major milestone on our road to recovery."

Speaking in his weekly radio and Internet address, Obama said, "I will sign this legislation into law shortly, and we’ll begin making the immediate investments necessary to put people back to work doing the work America needs done."

At the same time, he cautioned, "This historic step won’t be the end of what we do to turn our economy around, but rather the beginning. The problems that led us into this crisis are_deep and widespread, and our response must be equal to the task."

The bill passed Congress on Friday on_party-line votes, allowing Democratic leaders to deliver on their promise of clearing the legislation by mid-February.

Obama "now has a bill to sign that will create millions of good-paying jobs and help families and businesses stay afloat financially," said Sen. Max Baucus, a Montana Democrat who was a leading architect of the measure.

"It will shore up our schools and roads and bridges, and infuse cash into new sectors like green energy and technology that will sustain our economy for the long term," he added in a statement.

Hours earlier, Senate_Republican_Leader Mitch McConnell offered a different prediction for a bill he said was loaded with wasteful spending.

"A stimulus bill that was supposed to be timely, targeted and temporary is none of the above," he said in remarks on the Senate floor. "And this means Congress is about to approve a stimulus that’s unlikely to have much stimulative effect."

Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, in the Republican radio address Saturday, contended Democrats settled "on a random dollar amount in the neighbourhood of $1 trillion and then set out to fill the bucket."

You can't get to Zero, you can get to your liberal family and friends.

I have no liberal family or friends. They have been disowned for years.

If the bill had to be passed before anybody could read what was in it, why is he waiting a few days before he signs it?

I am getting sick of hearing this was a victory for the Boy President. What did he win?

on a separate thread it was mentioned Zeero cryed 'tears of joy' and proclaimed all the 'poor people' had now been helped. (I'm assuming, helped to remain poor) Zero can now move on to ruling the world.

The enemy who elected him is large. You can't get to Zero, you can get to your liberal family and friends. What are you going to do?

What I'm going to do is be invisible, anonymous, take care of my family and myself the best I know how, keep my head down and watch the show. The liberal bots out there are going to have to learn for themselves from now on. I see the lesson coming, so I'll get out of the way. They don't believe it, so they will learn the hard way. Good old fahioned bitter experience will seperate the fair weather liberals from the true zombies.

The reason that Obama claims that the stimulus bill is only the first step is because the economy is going to recover to a point, but this wasteful spending is going to cause a second wave of recession, which will be much worse. Then the Democrats will call for much more draconian regulations which will put the final nail in the coffin of capitalism.

[President] Obama calls stimulus overthrow of constitutional republic bill a "major milestone;" says it's just the beginning

Actually, it began in earnest with FDR, but Obama's going to try to finish it.

"This historic step won’t be the end..."

Won't be, but it will lead to it.

I’m starting to like that plan they had for splitting the country in two back in 2004 after President Bush won reelection.

I am far from an economic expert so I could easily be missing something. How can all this continue both nationally and world wise and the result not be some sort of finical reset or major governmental over through? That is the only ways I could see any possibility of value reset.

Do you know some other way things could end up back to some form of normality? How?

Weekend. Maximum show effect goes with the weekly ‘news cycle’, a weekend ceremony will delay the maximum publicity potential.

I have one used-to-be friend who voted for o’dumbo. I’ve tried talking to her. At first she was receptive and asked me to e-mail her info. Then I got a snarky e-mail saying she didn’t want anymore “political” e-mails from me.

And she doesn’t want to talk politics anymore.

Well after seeing everything except the kitchen sink thrown into the porkulus bill, I can’t think of any topic that is not reflected in the bill. So I guess we won’t be speaking anymore.

Oh, she’s ALWAYS having “trouble” and begging for help from the REPUBLICANS at our church. Funny, she never asks the other democRATS for help. Maybe because they’re also a bunch of shiftless types looking for a handout.

Very well said! Buy only necessities and don't borrow. I believe that it's the right thing to do in this economy anyway.
