The latest storm to hit California with heavy rain and mountain snow this weekend will have far-reaching effects across the country next week. This storm has the potential to spark another round of severe storms in the southern Plains and Deep South and spread a swath of heavy snow from the Midwest to the Northeast.

A winter storm will slowly drift ashore over northern California Sunday and Monday. Ahead of this storm, moisture will spread to the north and east, triggering snow. Through Monday morning, impact will be greatest along the central and northern Sierra Nevada to the southern Cascades in California. Here, amounts will be 6-12 inches with amounts to 2 feet above 5,000 feet. Travel along stretches of I-80 and I-5 will be affected. Farther north, lower amounts, mostly 1-3 inches, will fall widely between the Cascades and the northern Rockies of Montana and Idaho.

There always seems to be a storm on or near to Valentine’s Day. One last winter blast? Wasn’t the big blizzard of ‘88 in March?

THE NEXT STORM IS EXPECTED TO ARRIVE LATE SUNDAY NIGHT OR EARLY MONDAY. RAIN AND STRONG WINDS WILL DEVELOP ACROSS THE REGION MONDAY MORNING WITH SHOWERS LINGERING THROUGH TUESDAY. SOME OF THE RAIN COULD BE HEAVY AT TIMES ON MONDAY. PRELIMINARY STORM PRECIPITATION TOTALS COULD BE 1 TO 3 INCHES IN THE COASTAL BASIN...2 TO 4 INCHES IN THE MOUNTAINS AND UP 0.5 INCH IN THE DESERTS. THE SNOW LEVEL WILL RISE TO 5500-6000 FT WITH THE MAIN BAND OF RAIN THEN LOWER TO AROUND 4500 FT BEHIND THE FRONT. AS MUCH AS TWO FEET OF SNOW ARE POSSIBLE ABOVE 6000 FT IN THE SAN BERNARDINO MOUNTAINS.
Sounds to me that, if we just ignore global warming, the problem will go away.

March 1988 in history ..
03/10/1988 - Major blizzard across Nebraska and South Dakota. 33 inches of snow fell between the 10th and the 12th at Chadron NE. Drifts were reported as high as 10 feet there. The Fort Meade area of western South Dakota recorded an unbelievable 70 inches of new snow.
03/11/1988 - Major blizzard across the northern Plains. 69 inches of snow at Lead SD. Wind gusts as high as 63 mph piled snow into depths as high as 30 feet.
That map doesn’t show any snow in the Souther California mountains....the map drawer needs to talk to the San Diego office....
No problem, 1988 didn’t even rate on this list. ;-)

I’m in the rain/strong wind advisory area in the Central/Northern San Joaquin Valley. On a visit to the Bay Area today I was just admiring the bright green grass, blossoming trees and daffodils on the hillsides. However, it has been cold and rainy for several days now. Battening down the hatches for the night. Stay safe and warm, all of you Fellow Freepers.
