Hamburgers are the Hummers of food in global warming

When it comes to global warming, hamburgers are the Hummers of food, scientists say. Simply switching from steak to salad could cut as much carbon as leaving the car at home a couple days a week.

That's because beef is such an incredibly inefficient food to produce and cows release so much harmful methane into the atmosphere, said Nathan Pelletier of Dalhousie University in Canada.

Pelletier is one of a growing number of scientists studying the environmental costs of food from field to plate.

By looking at everything from how much grain a cow eats before it is ready for slaughter to the emissions released by manure, they are getting a clearer idea of the true costs of food.

The livestock sector is estimated to account for 18 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions and beef is the biggest culprit.

Good luck getting Americans to give up their steaks and hamburgers. I have and idea. Rats should push a $5/lb meat tax!

I knew there was a reason I felt like eating steak and eggs for breakfast this morning.

Speaking of methane producing bovines, where's Al Gore?

I’m thinking it’s time to start vegetarian wrangling. I don’t really want to eat them, I just wanna rope em, throw em to the ground, and brand em.

Why are these utterly talentless, useless Leftist “scientists” “studying” this again?

They already reached this stupid conclusion back in the 1970’s.

Meanwhile, as a total refutation of the importance of their “work” and further,a reflection of their utter stupidly, business at McDonalds is booming and Hardees has rolled out its Thickburgers.

That's because beef is such an incredibly inefficient food to produce

A pound of ground beef costs less than a pound of peppers, blueberries and many other fruits and vegetables and nearly all nuts.

Cheap hamburger might have cost 79 cents a pound in the mid seventies, and can be had easily for under $2 pound today. It sounds to me like it has gotten very efficient.

A Wendy's double will pretty much fill you up, those $4 salads (even the ones with meat as a garnish) are nothing more than glorified side dishes.

Global Warming is the most useful tool ever invented.

You can use it to justify changes in national sovreignty (the UN should be in charge of more things).
You can use it to justify changes in economics (capitalism is bad for the planet).
You can use it to justify changes in demographics (we need fewer people).
And you can use it to justify changes in diet (Hamburgers are bad for the planet).

Mind you, we're not sure that temperatures are going up (they've largely dropped the term Glonal Warming, because is seems like temperatures may be going down -- but anyway Climate Change is just are threatening as Warming, don't you think?).

And if climate change is happening, we really have no idea if we are the cause or if we could stop it. But never mind -- there's so much agenda stuff that can be driven by the concept that we ought to just make hay while the sun shines. So to speak.

At one time, the plains of North America were completely covered with buffalo.

Beef is a by-product of the dairy industry. Milk protein is so efficient to produce that it costs 3 to 5% as much as soy protein.

Cattle eat grass and other parts of plants that are indigestible to humans. It’s true that some cattle are fed corn, but they can thrive on leftovers and scraps.

When vegetable matter decays, it produces methane. It doesn’t matter if it passes through a cow or a worm.
