Vatican City, Feb 16, 2009 / 11:55 am (CNA).- On Monday at noon in Rome, the Vatican’s Press Office confirmed to CNA that Pope Benedict will be receiving U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi in an audience at noon on Wednesday.

Pelosi, a self-proclaimed "ardent Catholic" who has sparked significant criticism from fellow Catholics in the U.S. for her pro-abortion views, arrived in Italy on Sunday for an eight-day official visit.

After landing at the USAF base in Aviano, she and the American delegation met with the mayor Florence, Leonardo Domenici at the "Palazzo Vecchio" (The Old Palace.)

On Monday, Pelosi began a series of meetings with Italian political authorities at the Quirinale Palace, where she was received by the President of the Italian State, Giorgio Napolitano. She then moved to the nearby Italian Congress for a meeting with the President of the Government, Gianfranco Fini.

So the Pope allows himself to be used by Pelosi. Undoubtedely, she will use the visit herself to give legitamcy to her abortion and other views.

Why doesn't the Catholic church excommunicate Catholics who are 180 degrees out of phase with morality? Pat Leahy, the Kennedy's, Pelosi, etc.

There are more Catholics in Congress than any other religion. The Church could have enormous sway, and yet it does nothing.

Maybe he’s going to read her the riot act!

Or maybe perform an exorcism. She’ll melt when he throws the holy water at her!

I wish you were correct, but I am afraid you are very naive about the politics involved. Pelosi will come back feeling vindicated and will have no change in her position. There will never be any change in so-called “Catholics” politicians until the Pope reads them the riot act in public and excommunicates some of them — and that is never going to happen.

Right....give me a break. Do you think with Pelosi’s ego that she will back down? She will kiss his ring, he will talk with her and she will come back to the USA with no change in her position. Kind of reminds me of King Henry VIII. The Pope really doesn't have any power over her.

No one is saying the Pope will be swayed, but he is giving the botox b!tch a photo op that all the so called Catholics that vote for rats will see as acceptance of divergent views.

Exactly! If the Pope really wanted to make a point he would refuse to meet with her, but he can’t afford to because of the politics involved. She is number 3 in line to be President of the USA, so he has to be nice to her, no matter what she has said about abortion or anything else.

He could meet with her without a photo op.

I would hope the pope is not going to allow himself to be used by Pelosi. We will find out soon enough.

With all the recent problems the Catholic Church has had regarding homosexual priests preying on young boys you would think the last thing the Pope would do would be to pose for a photo op with this disgusting woman. She represents a district that is overrun with queer bathouses and HIV positive degenerates. Oh and did I mention her enthusiastic support for all abortions?

It’s the Pope’s job to meet with sinners and sway THEM.

Don’t forget, the Pope did have power over Henry VIII - which Henry acknowledged by leaving the Church and starting his own when he didn’t get his way.

As soon as the first US politician is publicly excommunicated, Pelosi and the liberal Catholics will probably end up starting their own show, too. And a lot of the US bishops will support them. They’ll get all the property, of course, as the Anglicans did under Henry VIII, and the press is going to love them. But the Church will survive without them.

I'll just say a prayer. Dear Lord, I know you don't hear from me often, but please help His Excellency see through her I'm-an-ardent-Catholic-banner-waving and tell him to see her for what she is. If He does nothing else, Dear Lord, allow Him the strength to raise His voice (within earshot of the microphones) and denounce Catholics who condone abortion.

P.S. It'd also be cool if she came away crying, I know, I ask too much.

Amen.
