DENVER -- President Barack Obama put his own indelible imprint on the nation's distressed economy Tuesday, signing the huge recovery package into law, readying a $50 billion proposal to help homeowners fend off foreclosure and awaiting emergency restructuring plans from flailing automakers.
Obama said the sprawling legislation, which congressional Democrats pushed to passage last week over near-unanimous opposition from Republicans, would "set our economy on a firmer foundation."
Obama's first major piece of legislation, it's a $787 billion mix of tax cuts and one of the biggest public spending programs since World War II.
"I don't want to pretend that today marks the end of our economic problems. Nor does it constitute all of what we have to do to turn our economy around. But today does mark the beginning of the end, the beginning of what we need to do to create jobs for Americans scrambling in the wake of layoffs," Obama said.

Readying other steps? Oh goody, the markets should drop another 300 tomorrow.
This bailout is just chump change for what will come next.
The gooberment cannot CREATE jobs, it can only get out of the way. Any attempts to “help” only impede small business.
DOW down -297. Can we handle any more stimulus?
Just a few days ago it was create or save jobs.
Gird your loins for another body blow.
Maybe we can issue spoons to all the unemployed and put them to work digging trench’s, roads and canals. We could pay them $35.00 per hour. Using spoons, we will never finish a single project.
The result-$35.00 might buy a tootsie roll
Is Increasing Welfare Dependence stimulus? Where is the money coming from if we do not have it?
This is a power grab to contol everyone’s life. They will control the poor as well as the rich.
Can we begin, now. . .impeaching Obama and all who voted for this transfer of pork-power? OR at least, try to? Why wait for a revolution? Why wait to be silenced and homeless?
True dat.
