Pope to Pelosi: Catholics cannot back abortion U.S. House speaker — a pro-choice Catholic — met with pope in Italy

VATICAN CITY - Pope Benedict, underscoring the Vatican's ruling on an issue that divides Americans, told U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday that Catholic politicians and legislators cannot back abortion rights.

Pelosi, a powerful U.S. politician who is Catholic and pro-choice, has been accused by U.S. bishops in the past of misrepresenting Church teachings on abortion.

"His Holiness took the opportunity to speak of the requirements of the natural and moral law and the Church's consistent teaching on the dignity of human life from conception to natural death ..." a Vatican statement said.

The Vatican said it was not issuing a photo of the meeting — as it usually does when the pope meets world leaders — saying the encounter was private.

No photo op. :-)

Meaningless unless the church starts excommunicating members who do vote for abortion

No, she just claims to be a Catholic. For her, it’s a social thing, like belonging to the right country club. If more of her constituents were Bhuddist, she would be Bhuddist too!

In an e-mail issued by her office, Pelosi did not mention the allusion to abortion. She said it was with "great joy" that she and her husband, Paul, met with Benedict.

Pelosi and Biden should be thrown out of the Catholic Church.

What percentage of Catholics voted for Obama? How do they reconcile that with their religious beliefs?
