NY Post Cartoon Links Obama to Dead Chimp
NBC ^ | 2/18/09 | staff

A New York Post cartoon that appears to link President Obama to a violent chimpanzee drew criticism Wednesday on media Web sites and from civil rights activist the Rev. Al Sharpton.

The cartoon in Wednesday's Post by Sean Delonas shows a dead chimp and two police officers, one with a smoking gun. The caption reads, “They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill.''

The cartoon refers to Travis the chimp, who was shot to death by police in Stamford, Conn. on Monday after it mauled a friend of its owner.

It links the chimp to Obama, who signed his administration's economic stimulus plan on Tuesday.

“At its most benign, the cartoon suggests that the stimulus bill was so bad, monkeys may as well have written it,'' columnist Sam Stein wrote in the liberal-leaning Huffington Post. “Most provocatively, it compares the president to a rabid chimp. Either way, the incorporation of violence and (on a darker level) race into politics is bound to be controversial.''

...my opinion is that the cartoon is worse than bad taste.

I'm surprised that you feel that way. Can you elaborate further?

Nothing wrong with guns. I love them! I was an infantry grunt, and I still have the attitude of one. That being said, With todays climate the cartoon is in bad taste. Do I like the cartoon? Yes. That’s why I said I love the point it was making.

[Travis the chimp, who was shot to death by police in Stamford, Conn. on Monday ]

I just noted the location of this event. For reasons known only to me, I find it hilarious....

Everyone is missinng the point. The stimulus packaqge is a Pork Bill designed to ensure fascist Dem power . It has little to do with the economy.

And so the left idjits think they can stop the criticism by howling " Racism!"

Eff evey one of them. It makes know difference who wrote the Prokuluis Bill, whether a Monkey , Ram Manual, Travis the Chimp or Obama.

On this end of things it all is the same, sufferinng of all Americans whether rich or poor for the sake of Dem power.

Thats fascism folks.

And the next shots won't be at Travis, but at the fascists themselves.

Well then you must have been “fronting” in your other posts and the real you just happened to come to the surface - quick push it back down inside!

Otherwise, have nice day and get over yourself and this stupid cartoon!

Can you elaborate further?

It's not bad enough that the chimp is Obama and Obama is the chimp. "Look at that little monkey run." almost finished Howard Cosell, and this is much more direct and obvious. I don't know how much clearer it could be. (What do you think of the cartoons that depict some unshaven fat guy with a hook-nose?) Cosell's comment was actually on honest complement IMHO. This is no complement as the monkey is shot dead apparently justifiably over the stimulus bill. Are we not looking at the same thing?

Hatteras why are you “...so overly sensitive to the plight of the owner of this vicious wild animal, and why it bothers you so much that the recent death of the vicious wild animal might be used in a political cartoon.”

Amen!

ml/nj,

I recommend reading Post #41; I think it comes the closest to “hitting the mark” on the intent of the cartoonist.

I think you might be reading too much into it.

Considering some of the nicknames and characterizations the leftloonies stuck on GWB, I think they've got it coming. "Chimpy MacHitler" was one that particularly to mind.

Under the circumstances, I can't think of any reason we should hold back on "Chimpy MacStalin"...

They are stretching pretty hard to make this about Obama. It’s just a cartoon, what kind of mind would make it about Obama? I think it’s saying even a chimp could write a better bill. That could be congress, the senate, the administration, any or all.

Where were all the whiners when No. 43 was being called “Chimpy McBushitler?”

They were joining the chorus.

Bush isn't black. Not a good reason, but that's it.

When Obama and the Dims act like out of control monkeys, they’ve gotta expect this sort of reaction. Besides, I thought all liberals believed in evolution.

“It’s not bad enough that the chimp is Obama and Obama is the chimp.” & “...much more direct and obvious”

Obama did NOT write the stimulus bill, so THAT is the most direct and obvious thing!

Just because the NY Post and apparently YOU decide to compare/see Obama as a chimp doesn’t mean that is what the artist intended.

In the cartoon, the shot chimp is explicitly sympolic of the writer of the stimulus bill. Although we don't know precisely who wrote the bill, it is reasonable to presume that it was done literally by a group of Democrat congressional staffers, most of whom are probably white. And yes, many, including most of the posters on this thread, are ticked off at the stimulus bill and and its authors. The cartoon is merely a benign way to express legitimate anger and opposition at the bill itself. That's why I suggested that the cartoonist would have better off to have labeled the deceased chimp as "Stimulus Bill," and to have changed the policeman's comment accordingly. That would have made it clear that the target of the cartoon was the policy embedded in the bill, not any particular individual.

Nancy Pelosi wrote the ‘stimulus’ (Porkulus) bill.

Present Obama does not do anything, his handlers do everything.

All he is is a pretty face.
