Media Swoon: First Family Fuses Fashion, 'Philanthropy'

Anyone want to guess what the media would be saying if a young, stylish Republican President and his wife were in office? I remember the media criticism of Nancy Reagan's high-fashion in the 1980s. It didn't exactly play like this:

Under Obama, D.C. turns fashionable

Washington, D.C., might not be ready to overtake New York, Paris or Milan as a fashion mecca, but with a stylish first couple as its best ambassadors since the Kennedy era, the sartorially challenged seat of power in sensible pinstripes is finally getting a little respect.

Fashion observers credit the change to new Vogue cover girl Michelle Obama, a steady influx of high-end retailers... and a bevy of fashion-oriented events such as this week's DC Fashion Week and Northern Virginia Fashion Week, which starts Monday.

"All eyes are on D.C. - people are looking to it as the telltale of not just policy, but of style and taste," says Maria Cuomo Cole... "The ultimate tastemakers are in the White House."

The last place I want people looking to for anything is Washington D.C., but much less for a new fashion leader. But the Times is loving it.

Calling Mrs. Obama "a breath of fresh air here," style consultant and Washington Life editor Lana Orloff said, "I've never seen so much media attention on what she is wearing....

My grandmother wouldn’t have let me out the door looking like Aunt Esther. GRANDMA didn’t look like Aunt Esther. Well, her house dresses did but she wore them to clean.

Fashion designer Kenneth Cole and wife Maria Cuomo-Cole bought a $14.5 million co-op in the elite building One Sutton Place South, according to city records. The Coles used to live at 975 Fifth Avenue, but will surely feel at home in their new midtown digs. The late fashion designer Bill Blass used to live in the building and Ms. Cuomo-Cole’s father, former Governor Mario Cuomo, bought a co-op at 50 Sutton Place in 1994 after his stint in Albany.

If I could see the complete outfits, rather than just head-and-neck, I’d probably start hyperventilating and have to be revived with wine and cookies ;-).
