Boy Scouts call on the Bushes for food donation
WFAA.COM ^ | 2/22/09 | GARY REAVES

If you've seen the yellow bags on your door knob, you probably know this is the day Boy Scouts collect food for the hungry.

Their goal - 500,000 items.

But behind one door knob, a local Cub Scout troop solicited a pretty special donor, former president George W. Bush.

For 10,000 local kids, scouting for food is door to door, and it's neighbor to neighbor.

But for the boys of Troop 19, their newest neighbor is guarded by the police and the Secret Service. Getting the former president's canned goods is no simple matter.

"You had to do a bit of coordinating with the Secret Service and with President Bush's scheduler," said Nancy Burke, Wolf Cub Den leader.

They held a drawing to choose which two kids would ring the Bushes' bell.

Then, they blanketed the neighborhood. One even collected a can of Bush beans. Then they headed out of our camera's view to meet the man who's been either governor or president their entire short lives.

WFAA-TV Neighbors say the Bushes are trying fit in. In a few minutes, they emerged with two bags of canned goods.

"They gave me carrots," said one Scout.

And lots of stories.

"Former president Bush, he said 'come on down,' so we could all come over and meet him," said one.

"His hand was warm," said another.

The Bushes, both of them, blew off the rules, and posed for pictures with all the Scouts.

Chandler Burke even got a souvenir.

"He asked if I was working on my Eagle project, I said, 'yes, I'm working to repair some baseball bleachers.' Then I took out this baseball and asked him to sign," said one Scout.

Neighbors say the Bushes are trying fit in, so they are helping the Scouts help thousands, because that's what good neighbors do.

I can just hear all the smears and personal attacks if CNN or MSNBC were to do this story. In fact, helping the Boy Scouts would be reported as proof that Bush doesn’t like gay people.

Good for George and Laura..

If the Boy Scouts leave a bag on your door, please donate! At this time of the year, the food banks are in their worst shape...this helps them every year.

This year, they need the help even more!

I live in a small town in NC where all of the women’s clubs and organizations have asked that their members bring a canned good or other nonperishable to every meeting they attend. The items that are collected will be donated to the local food bank.

Excellent! Something else that really helps the food banks is $5 or $10 grocery store gift cards. Many of the people they help have babies, and the gift cards are good for baby food, diapers, enfamil and other goods the food banks never get.

Very nice of them to invite the entire pack. Have you ever noticed that conservative groups give to food banks? I know that our local JROTC has a huge food drive every year. I don’t see the Peach and Justice folks doing as much.

The MSM outlets will never report this. Selective ignorance perpetuated by the marxists.

I love that "trying to fit in" comment. My sister lives in Austin and they love George and Laura. I don't think anyone needs to wonder whether or not they'll be accepted.

Now, Clinton...I wonder if they would comment on the "trying to fit it" comment. Takes on a completely different meaning.

Sorry, GAY people are those enjoying life. You are more appropriately referring to homosexuals (come on, I’m trying to be nice this morning, by not calling anyone queer or fag, but GAY they ain’t!)

A local newspaper reporter was in a restaurant and realized that Mrs. Bush was sitting with friends in a table nearby. No fuss and feathers. She has always been low key. Reminding me of a TV show many years ago, a version of a book by a balck lady who had served as a domestic in the White House. Her favorite first lady was Grace Coolidge, a wonderful woman. And the president, who heard that the roof was leaking in the servants’ quarters way up top, and came upstairs himself by himself to check on it. No president had ever been up there. He then went back downstairs and reported the matter. “Silent Cal” was in fact very friendly and made himself at home in the kitchen. The Hoovers, on the other hand, were not pleasant people. The staff liked the Roosevelts, of course, but their favorites were the Coolidges. He was, btw, the last President who was able to read Greek and Latin. A much underrated president.

No and you won’t. I am sure many believe that the system is evil and unjust and such actions only weaking the coming revolution. Besides people in the Peace and Justice movement have much more important things to do than try to help feed hungry people.

We did pretty well in our area. It is usually 20% that do all the giving. I just hope we helped enough people.
