Will The Real Monkey Stand Up! Rev. Peterson Blasts Sharpton Over NY Post Cartoon Controversy

Rev. Al Sharpton and NAACP President Benjamin Jealous—outraged over a New York Post cartoon which they claim is “racist” and that the NAACP chief says is an invitation to assassinate President Barack Obama, are calling for a boycott of The Post. Sharpton also wants the FCC to investigate the parent company News Corp. and look into its hiring practices. The Post cartoon showed the bullet-riddled body of a chimp, shot by two cops with one of the officers stating: "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill.” The Post issued an apology stating that the cartoon was meant to mock "Washington's efforts to revive the economy." Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson, Founder and President of BOND Action, Inc., issued the following statement regarding this matter:

“The Post cartoon was provocative, but not racist. And it certainly was not an ‘invitation’ to assassinate President Obama. These are manufactured allegations by racist left-wing Democrat operatives. Sharpton, the NAACP, and their angry mob of supporters want to intimidate and silence independent media outlets like The New York Post and The FOX News Channel. The cartoon was poking fun at the ineptness of those who wrote the horrible stimulus welfare package—nothing more.

“I’ve said repeatedly on my national radio show that Barack Obama was elected because of white guilt and black racism. The majority of whites voted for Obama to prove once and for all that they don’t have racial hang-ups. Ninety-six percent of blacks voted for him because of his race. We now have the first black president and his party leading our nation towards socialism; and anyone who dares poke fun or criticize are racists?

“Most blacks see racism under every rock and newspaper because they’ve never repented of their anger and racism toward whites. But this so-called boycott is not about racism; it’s an attempt to muzzle free speech. And it’s apparent who the real monkey is in this circus.”

The thing that really seems strange to me about this is that so many blacks - well, black grievance con-artists - should immediately think that a monkey represents black people.

I’m white, and this didn’t occur to me at all when I saw the cartoon. I thought about the old story of 1000 monkeys at typewriters for a million years (or whatever) turning out the works of Shakespeare, and I saw it as a comment on the bill, not on any individual of any color.

Why are the so-called “black leaders” doing their best, not only to perpetuate negative images, but to plant them in the minds of people who have never even thought of them before?

Since I don’t live in the States, I would never have known this cartoon existed until crooked, racists Al Sharpton opened his yap. I am sure many in the U.S. would never have been aware of it either until Sharpton went phony ballistics.

Because he made me aware of it, I sent it to everyone I know in the event they hadn’t seen it.

Let us assume as true that which is undeniably untrue: the cartoon was racist.

Even racist speech is free speech. Do we really want to intimidate the press out of free speech, even racist speech, by invoking the full weight of the federal government to intimidate the utterer of the speech? Do we really want to chill free speech, even racist speech, at this price?

Do we really want the government with its monopoly of power and violence, with all its great ability to intimidate through tax and licensing regulations, to be at the irresponsible disposition of the likes of Reverend Sharpton? Are we not thereby empowering Sharpton to engage in legalized extortion? Are we sure that we can control the likes of Reverend Sharpton and protect not just the press but every private citizen? I cannot invoke the criminal and quasi criminal apparatus of the federal, state, and local governments whenever I am aggrieved, can you?

Should we let a private citizen of dubious motivation define for the rest of the world what is free speech and what is not, what is politically correct and what is not, what should bring down government upon us? Even if the cartoon were racist-and it is not-a civilized and lawful society should require that that determination not be made by some race baiter off the street but only by lawful authorities whose jurisdiction is invoked when and only when there is reasonable cause to believe that a crime has been committed and the defendant, committed the crime.

I can think of no more pernicious practice entering into our criminal justice system than to permit and extortionist like Reverend Sharpton to precipitate criminal investigation when no crime has been committed, merely because the Reverend believes that the object of his agitation has committed racism.
