Orbiting NASA observatory to map, monitor CO2

NASA readied the launch early Tuesday of a satellite that will produce the first complete map of the Earth's human and natural sources of carbon dioxide, CO2, the gas most closely linked to climate change.

The Orbiting Carbon Observatory, or OCO, was scheduled to be launched at 0951 GMT (1:51 am) from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California on board the Taurus XL rocket built by Orbital Science Corp., NASA said in a statement posted Monday on its website.

It would be the first time NASA has used a Taurus rocket.

NASA said the observatory would map the geographic distribution of CO2 sources and study their changes over time.

The measurements will be integrated with those from ground observation stations and other satellites to get a fuller picture of the processes that regulate CO2 and its role in Earth's climate and carbon cycles, according to the space agency.

The data gathered by the OCO satellite will help scientists project increases in CO2 with greater precision, thereby enabling them to more accurately forecast changes in climate.

Policymakers and the private sector could use the data to make better decisions aimed at improving the quality of life on Earth, NASA said.

"It's critical that we understand the processes controlling carbon dioxide in our atmosphere today so we can predict how fast it will build up in the future and how quickly we'll have to adapt to climate change caused by carbon dioxide buildup," said David Crisp, the OCO's principal investigator at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

Will the CO2 results be faxed directly to Al Gore’s office?

I suppose it wouldn’t go over well if it reported that Vandenburg was the biggest contributor.

Is it just me, or does Government attract idiots like a bucket of vomit and/or shit would attract flies?

Pool starting: How many days after finding data that conflicts with man-made CO2 global warming will this satellite “fail” and burn up in the atmosphere?

This is good news ...

Given the fraud I’ve seen in Al Gore’s baloney, I’m thinking that this scientific study will blow holes into his global warming theory.

We shall see.

CO2 is present in the atmosphere in only trace amounts, 380 parts per million. Greenhouse gases are essential - without them the earth would be far too cold for us. Water vapor is the most common greenhouse gas. The “man-made global warming crisis” is a hoax. it isn’t science; it’s demagogic politics.

This is why these people will never admit defeat, they've created an entire industry to address the AGW hoax. Can you imagine how big the contracts were for this project and how many people it will employ???

It’s anti-human science. If there weren’t so many people, there wouldn’t be a global-warming problem. So we should all go to Carausel when we’re no longer productive, say, at age 50.

I just read a report that a satellite that maps ice (http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601110&sid=aIe9swvOqwIY), under reported the extent of Arctic sea ice by an area of 193,000 square miles - roughly the size of California. It wasn’t a NASA satellite, rather a DOD bird, but one would hope they could do a bit better with all the sky-is-falling hysteria on the left about global warming. The scientists are passing it off as a “glitch”, but, that’s one massive chunk of ice they thought had melted - more like a continental sized screw-up imho. “Garbage in - garbage out” has never been more apropos. There’s trouble ahead little buckaroos.

the atmosphere contains only .036% CO2!!

That’s about a single drop of water in an entire aquarium of water. Please tell me how that’s going to effect anything! I’m actually amazed there’s even enough for the plants to survive.

I’m thinking that this scientific study will blow holes into his global warming theory.

Only if the data are accurately compiled and reported. Something there has been some trouble with in the temperature department.

The number of jobs, grants, and amount of sheer money tied up in this program for , (how long, now?), makes me wonder if that may have something to do with the lack of vogor in reporting data processing errors in the past and the fact that the temps are actually going down for the last nearly decade.

Can't be scuttling all those jobs, now, can they. In the meantime, the Obamites will use it to seek out carbon tax 'cheats' even though half the bloody administration can't pay their own taxes.

Hugh discovery:
The plants are eating CO2 and spewing poisonous O2. oxygen alert coming up, sell oxygen credits.
In another news PITA (pain in the aaas) is picketing Algore for depriving trees of CO2.
It is getting series!
