"Not One of Us" (Thomas Sowell on Sarah Palin)
Real ClearPolitics ^ | 2-23-09 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 02/23/2009 9:19:15 PM PST by VinL

If Barack Obama has been the most remarkable phenomenon of the recent political scene, Sarah Palin must be second. The emotional responses to each-- especially by the media and the intelligentsia -- go beyond anything that can be explained by the usual political differences of opinion on issues of the day.

That liberals would be thrilled by another liberal is not surprising. But there are conservative Republicans who voted for Barack Obama, and other conservatives who may not have voted for him, but who are quick to see in various pragmatic moves of his since taking office an indication that he is not an extremist.

Anyone familiar with history knows that Hitler and Stalin were pragmatic. After years of denouncing each other, they signed the Nazi-Soviet pact under which they became allies for a couple of years before going to war against one another.

Pragmatism tells you nothing about extremism.

She's not bright enough to be prez or veep. And I doubt she will learn anything between now and then because she's not the learnin' type.

Gosh, I guess all that she'd learned, after becoming Gov. of Alaska, about energy resources, and with that, gaining the ability to negotiate with the Canadians regarding the the new pipeline doesn't count with you, huh?

Remains to be seen what more she'll learn before 2012, doesn't it?

We shall see come 2012. We shall see, I have hunch she’s going to dust the both of those fine fellas you hold in such esteem. But let us at least agree to fall in behind whichever the candidate that has the task of taking on Obamanation. I just want to hear you say you will support Sarah vigorously if she’s the nominee.

You call yourself a "humble father" on your home page. Somehow, regarding the importance you put on such manipulative meant-to-impress fripperies like involvement in clubs, organizations or groups targeting peopel for academic excellence, or cumulative GPA (I have a brother whose very high IQ, ability to think three-dimensionally, to lead men and teams, and technical skills to engineer/problem solve earn him a ton of dough and put him in top demand in the field of very technically-complex construction projects; he has no college degree and a pretty low GPA from a few years in community college -- your life experience has been LIMITED ... please recognize it!) ... and what you regard as a "stunted" vocabulary ...

Well, pardon me for recognizing in your post the kind of guy who'd bore people around him with stories of how high his kids' GPAs are, their involvement in goody-two-shoes organizations, and the extent of their vocabularies. "Humble father," indeed -- if you were that humble, you'd understand better why Palin is so easy for regular folks to identify with.

For what it's worth, I have a degree in Journalism, and I agree 100 percent that it's a very easy degree to get and anyone who gets one didn't have to do much, and that includes not learning proper grammar nor expanding their vocabularies.

I will also say that I have made a humble but adequate and very enjoyable living as a writer for decades, and have interviewed and quoted literally thousands of people. BELIEVE ME, I know of what I speak -- the size of one's vocabulary and their use of it has ZERO to do with intelligence, native or cultivated. None.

"So please tell me what presidential attributes do these all including Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, Hillary Clinton, Bobby Jindal, Tim Pawlenty, Jon Huntsman, Mike Sanford, Eric Cantor, etc have that Sarah Palin doesn’t."

Well, I'm not the press agent for any of the aforementioned, but I'll give it a shot.

Mitt Romney - BYU - Class Valedictorian, Harvard JD AND MBA, Founded Bain Capital(the preeminent capital mgmt. company in the country), Organized a disorganized Olympics, Ran a state with ten times the population of AK.

Mike Huckabee - No idea, Huckster's got a thin resume himself.

Hillary Clinton - Grad/with honors from Wellesly & Yale.

Bobby Jindal - Brown Grad, Magna Cum Laude, Rhodes Scholar.

Tim Pawlenty - Honors student, Minnosata undergrad and Law School

Jon Hunstman - Don't know anything about him.

Mark Sanford - BBS Fuhrman w/honors, UVA Business School MBA

Eric Cantor - GW Undergrad, MS from Columbia, JD William & Marry

Almost everyone listed not only went to a good college (although that's not a Presidential requirement) but they excelled at Academics while there (which should be a requirement). Additionally, everyone of them were deeply involved in a number of organizations while in school and held leadership positions in those organization as well. And what else? I'm quite sure that every one of the above could name about 10 daily publications that they read - BECAUSE THEY READ THEM. And, they all speak like they've been to college and STUDIED while they were there.

I don't think it's too much to ask that our possible Commander & Chief read something other than what comes up on a google search.

I supported her vigorously as the VP nominee (I have the receipts to prove it) and, God forbid she wins the nomination in 2012, will be cannon fodder once again.

I expect her presidential primary campaign in 2012 to be short and sweet. She'll make one or two huge gaffes out of the box and that will be it.

So - she looked at him the same way after gang of 7, gang of 14, voting against the Bush tax cuts, years of supporting McCain-Feingold, banning torture, support for cap and trade, opposition to offshore and ANWR drilling, support for fetal stem cell research, and ... *catches breath* .... did I miss something?

But it was support for emergency bank loans that made her never look at him the same way again?

If that's true, then you have just made the case as to why she isn't so bright after all. Thanks.

You are missing more important facts about Jindal and Sanford. Jindal was given a HUGE government portfolio at a very young age by W and handled it brilliantly - after turning around a similar government agency in Louisiana.

Sanford is a business creator as well, with tremendous success in the private sector. He use to work on Wall Street and has a rare grasp of the details of the problems that the country is facing.

"your life experience has been LIMITED ... please recognize it!)"

How in the wide world of sports do you have idea what my "life experiences" may or may not be?

"Somehow, regarding the importance you put on such manipulative meant-to-impress fripperies like involvement in clubs, organizations or groups targeting peopel for academic excellence, or cumulative GPA"

I'm not sure how we got to this point, but somehow there's a percentage of Americans that think it's a badge of honor to graduate from college "just barely" and while there to demonstrate ZERO intellectual, social or cultural curiosity. And, not only that it's a "good" thing, but it's what we need in a commander and chief.

Sowell makes a good case for Palin. Nobody who voted for Obama can really say that Palin is too inexperienced to be president.

But still, the fact that Palin couldn't or wouldn't name one newspaper or magazine that she read to inform herself is pretty devastating. She looked quite inept at that point.

I know some people will say that it doesn't matter because her heart is in the right place and who needs the media anyway? But a lot of people said that about Bush and lived to regret their innocence or trustfulness or undemandingness.

Last night I was reading and interview with Frederick Smith (Founder/CEO of FedEx) and wouldn't ya know it! They asked him what books he's been reading lately. It seems to be a fairly common question. That guy is quite interesting. I don't know much about his politics, other than that he served on the McCain campaign, but there's a guy with a resume of achievement.

Yale, Marine Corps, founder of Fedex. Impressive.

I wouldn't make it a requirement. College is overrated. Demonstrated intelligence and ACCOMPLISHMENT goes a long way in my book. Good college is nice, but not a deal breaker.

I completely agree. A good college or a great college shouldn't be the entrance exam to the Presidency. I would also agree that what you've accomplished and experienced since your college graduation are much, much more important and indicative of what kind of leader you'd be.

I would like a Presidential candidate who demonstrates continual and unrelenting intellectual curiosity. In the final analysis, that's not Sarah Palin.

I couldn't have imagined a better after-work article to read. This is fantastic. Hopefully, it *might* even change the minds of some people on the Right, (and here at FR), who have erroneously pegged Gov Palin as 'not electable'.
Gov Palin is simply magnificent. Her number of supporters will grow surely and steadily in the months and years ahead. What's great is that we are all going to be privy to have been witness to one of America's most remarkable stories and first female President.

One of the biggest complaints the elitists had of Sarah Palin was that she didn’t go to a big name college.

They were just as snobbish when regarding William & Mary and Eureka.
Though I'm sure Mssrs. Jefferson and Reagan would much admire the grand lady of Alaska.

Your posts on this thread are not only erroneous and inaccurate but I suspect a designed, purposeful smear of Gov P.
