MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Target Corp. said Tuesday that its fourth-quarter profit fell 41 percent as consumer spending suffered amid high unemployment and other economic woes.

The discount retailer earned $609 million, or 81 cents per share, in the quarter ended Jan. 31. That compares to $1.03 billion, or $1.23 per share, a year earlier.

Revenue in the quarter fell 1.6 percent to $19.02 billion. Sales at stores open at least a year fell 5.9 percent, the company said. Sales at new stores partially offset that.

Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters, who typically exclude one-time items, had expected Target to earn 83 cents per share on revenue of $19.5 billion.

Would like to see Target succeed.

Do not want to see Wal Mart as a monopoly....once Wal Mart is a monopoly they will raise prices astronomincally and limit supply....it would be like buying from a USSR commie state-run store

Preen as a pre-emergent weed killer, then cardboard or thick layers of newspaper covered with straw. Then careful applications of Round-up between the rows.

Or lots of hoeing/pulling, LOL!

I think inflation is right around the corner. I can’t believe they’ve staved it off so far!

I shop Wal-Mart for basics; I don’t like Target for some reason. Can’t put my finger on it. I’ve decided to mainly shop my local grocer’s store brands to both give him the business and to save money.

For this next month, I plant on buying NOTHING but milk, butter and fresh fruits and veggies. I am eating up EVERYTHING in the house to use the regular grocery money to pay down debt.

I’m kind of looking forward to it, actually. ;)

Grass seed (for lawns!) is through the roof. Any of our usual chemicals that are pretoleum related in any way have really shot up in price, too.

Tell me about it!!..had to scalp, aerate, reseed last fall again after the drought of 2007 (renovated then too). This year the lawn is looking like it will come in OK as last season was good for the fescue.

Hedge funds played a major manipulation in oil last year.

In July '08, 4 men (companies) had 71% of all the NYMEX oil futures.
