IBM Files Patent for Bullet Dodging Bionic Body Armor

IBM has filed a patent (US 7484451) for Bionic Body Armor, that could essentially allow us to dodge bullets like Neo in The Matrix. The armor would scan areas for incoming projectiles and when one is detected the system would deliver a shock to the muscles causing a swift reflexive action away from the projectile. Here's what the patent describes the body armor as:

A method of protecting a target from a projectile propelled from a firearm comprises detecting an approaching projectile, continuously monitoring the projectile and transmitting an actual position of the projectile to a controller, computing an estimated projectile trajectory based upon the actual position of the projectile, determining an actual position of a target with a plurality of position sensors and a plurality of attitude sensors, determining whether the estimated projectile trajectory coincides with the actual position of the target, and triggering a plurality of muscle stimulators operably coupled to the controller and to the target when the estimated projectile trajectory coincides with the actual position of the target, wherein the muscle stimulators stimulate the target to move in a predefined manner, and wherein the target moves by an amount sufficient to avoid any contact with the approaching projectile. The projectile may be detected in the detecting step by emitting an electromagnetic wave from a projectile detector and receiving the electromagnetic wave after the electromagnetic wave has been reflected back toward the projectile detector by the projectile.

Artificial reflexes. Interesting.

I wonder if nerve impulses and muscle action are really fast enough to do this for any nearby shots.

I've read 100 to 120 meters per second.

“Let’s see, incoming at 3000 fps from 50 yards (150 feet) away. Flight time 50 milliseconds”

Running the numbers is always a buzz kill.

Heheh... sounds like a great way to break somebody in half.

But that said, if this sort of projectile tracking could actually be developed, there may be some really interesting uses for it. I’m thinking of adaptive armor that can adjust itself slightly to better handle an incoming bullet. Perhaps an armor shield on a car window that can somehow move into the path of a bullet, allowing the glass or other armor to be thinner and lighter. Or... a lighter-weight chain-mail type armor that can sense where a bullet may strike and ‘skrunch-up’ in that zone. That way, the armor is lighter overall. Don’t know, but it’s an intriguing concept.

Buckshot V is 1200 fps? But in all probability the range will be shorter, plus you have the impact pattern (seven inches at 25 yd?) so the dodge distance is higher (17.5 inches).

Flight time 62.5 ms

Dodge Distance 17.5 in

Dodge Speed 23 fps

Dodge Accel 11.65 ft/sec^2

Still wrenching.

At original 50 yds, lets keep the velocity constant. What's a 00 pattern at 50 yds, 11 inches? So half of that plus half of chest width, dodge dist 16 inches,

Flight time 125 ms

Dodge Dist 16 in

Dodge speed 11 fps

Accel about 3G

(I think the acceleration will need to be a littl ehigher in all cases because of the way I'm calculating dodge velocity needed to clear the impact zone).

Wonder how this suit would do with shotguns?

Really would hate to be the live test subject on this one.

I could see this being a real funny scene in a comedy though.

I really enjoy running back-of-envelope calcs, though. Sometimes I get paid $$ for applying Ohm’s law or F=MA.

One man’s buzz kill is another man’s buzz!

Anything that can detect an incoming bullet, and move the body quicker than it takes the bullet to arrive, is likely to do as much or more damage to the body than the bullet. At ranges of a few feet to maybe twenty yards, we are talking speeds of around 1/1000 of a second. What kind of impact is necessary to move a human body quick enough to avoid that?

Frankly, from the sounds of it it'll be easier than that. Throw a handful of rocks toward someone wearing this high-speed armor, then shoot at them when impulses directing the body toward conflicting movement freezes them in place.

Or use a short-barrel shotgun.

Nice math .... now assume that the projectiles are not detected until halfway there.

Then for giggles ... let's throw in a nice 7 round burst of .223 at 2900 fps. :)

Thanks. ;-)

What is an effective range of a shotgun in case of SHTF or EOWAWKI (end of the world as we know it - we are getting close with O’s depression)?

Urban combat or fighting against the UN goons putting us into labor camps not hunting.

I like Bambi myself ;-)

I guess I better get used to hunting, fishing or gardening pretty soon. :-(

“Anything that can detect an incoming bullet...”

But what about other projectiles, i.e.m dodging a rocket-propelled grenade? They don’t move at the speed a bullet does.

It will be fun to watch the tests.
