Sorry to turn this into Matthews Day at HA. I don’t think Hitch means this disapprovingly — he certainly didn’t two years ago when he defended the prospect of a long commitment in Afghanistan — but things have deteriorated since then, to the point where some NATO countries are now considering asking Iran to provide them with supply routes. As noted last week, if you listen hard you can already hear the first stirrings of leftist anti-war grumbling about “the good war”; Matthews is clearly warming to the thought of giving up, and it won’t take much for liberals as hardcore as Conason to turn.

I disagree that the Left will support Obama on this. The Left hasn’t learned anything in the last 60 years. To the Left, every U.S. war is an imperialist war, the other side are the good guys, and all our efforts a Vietnam-style quagmire. The Left will say we can’t defeat the Taliban.
Yes they did, but the Kosovo effort was mostly ignored by all but the absolute die hard fringe leftists. It’s hard to tell what the left will do at times. I would expect a ground war to get more focus though. Obama could be vulnerable. I’d be $1 to $100 he’d fold before he let that criticism get too serious.
The demonrats don’t want our Army back in our country.
Only if it's a long profitable debacle...... Afghanistan will take years to lose.....ask the Brits and Russians

The Left owns this war in Afghanistan. They wholly supported it and have constantly complained that going into Iraq caused the problems in Afghanistan. No matter what happens now there, it’s their war.
It's theirs. And, best of all (for them) there's plenty of cheap dope!
The Libs do NOT care how the U.S. is harmed. The evidence is in the media coverage everyday. The Libs will not be happy until our United States is in the toilet!

LOL, I hear ya, but the there is that plan of Obama’s to create an internal army as strong as the external. Go figure!
The Left will embrace this war as the fight Bush should have been concentrating on all along . As long as we are seen as winning they will cautiously support it and use it as a tool to beat Bush and look tough on protecting America's foreign interests.
But when we start taking serious causalities they will get the Memo . Their new position they held all along is this was Bush's impossible war and we must pull out to regain America's position as leader of the Free world.

Well, Christopher, isn’t Afghanistan the war the moonbats have always said was the only legitimate one? I don’t know why they’d be upset that That One is moving soldiers from the wrong war to the ‘right’ one.
