Conservatives ask: Is Durbin going after Limbaugh? By Alexander Bolton Posted: 02/26/09 04:58 PM [ET] Conservatives fear that Democrats are pursuing a “back door” approach to cracking down on Clear Channel Communications, the media conglomerate that airs "The Rush Limbaugh Show," a favorite among conservatives.

The Senate voted along party lines Thursday to adopt an amendment sponsored by Sen. Dick Durbin (Ill.), the second-ranking Democrat in the chamber, that directs the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to “promote diversity in communication media ownership and to ensure that broadcast station licenses are used in the public interest.”

The measure passed 57-41 without a single Republican vote.

Durbin said his proposal would encourage more women and minorities to apply for radio and TV ownership.

But Sen. Jim DeMint (S.C.), chairman of the conservative Senate Republican Steering Committee, charged the proposal would lead to regulatory pressure on Clear Channel, which owns and operates more than 1,200 radio stations in the United States.

I believe I’ve heard him say that he wouldn’t like the pay cut.

Sure would be nice if he did, though.

What laws can Rush pass? I think you are being casual about this power grab.

He’s upset because Rush calls him “little Dick Turbin”.

If Rush loses his radio program, he might try to run then. He’d get pretty bored. But how would he campaign? Interviews on PBS?

These questions would be very much more interesting if we could have confidence that they would be reviewed by a court animated only by the Constitution.

As it is, any constitutional question is basically going to be decided by Anthony Kennedy.

That state of affairs does not fill me with confidence...

Yes, but “Public Interest” is defined by ACORN, not by the listening public.

It's a pretty lucrative business for the one's currently in office. Of course Rush wouldn't be on the take.

Isn't NPR and PBS 99% represented by Democrats, minorities, and the left? The left would lose them if the Fairness Doctrine was implemented...I wouldn't mind seeing Rush or Beck on PBS or listening to them on NPR.

Don't think that's gonna happen.

Someone at FCC will have to judge and decide which show is "biased" and needs "balance", and the Dems will make sure he's one of their own. By their reckoning, PBS and NPR are bias-free and to allow a right-wing conservative to speak would only destroy their "balance".

Count on it.

Seems vague and lacking in teeth.

Interesting thought that not a single RINO voted for it, or rat against.

Rush has been on their radar for a long time.

The Left can’t tolerate his success and their own failure in the radio business. They’ve constantly moaned about it being unfair that Rush is broadcast on Armed Forces Radio with no representation from their ‘side’. They forget that Rush provides his program gratis to the military.

Now enter a socialist puppet of a president steeped in the rabid anger and sense of entitlement of ‘Progressive ideals’ who sees fit to call out a private citizen in public and essentially calls the dogs to hound this citizen.

It’s only free speech when it follows their agenda and it’s alarming how quickly this hunt has been called on a private US citizen. Who’ll be next?

“Interesting thought that not a single RINO voted for it, or rat against.”

That should tell you something. As I understand it, the GOP isn’t even allowed to read the bill yet. That’s why I say we’re being blitzed, “Lightning Warfare”.
