Things must really be getting tough. A congressman has acknowledged that “even” the lords of Capitol Hill need to tighten their belts.
Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) made the revealing statement on GMA today. Robin Roberts had invited him to comment on Brian Ross’ investigative report that the head of Bank of America had flown to NYC on a fancy private jet to meet with officials from the NY Attorney General’s office, which is investigating the billions in bonuses Merrill Lynch doled out just before being acquired by BofA. Cummings gave a predictable reply: corporate bosses are “on another planet.” They don’t “get it.” They do “outlandish things.” etc. Roberts then turned the tables:

Dem Cummings: ‘Even’ Congressmen Need To Make Sacrifices
Here are some ‘sacrifices’ I’d like congress to make:
1) eliminate congressional pensions
2) no lobbying for 5 years after leaving office
3) no relatives or spouses lobbying WHILE in office
4) stop using Walter Reed for medical care
5) Pass term limits...
It is dangerous to oppose them. They might invoke ‘primum noctis’.
Rep. Cummings Says corporate CEO’S have come to Congress And to the American taxpayers BEGGING for money to stay alive. And he says at the same time they go on junkets and provide extensive bonuses just outlandish activity. And they just don’t get it. Has he been smoking crack with Marion Barry or what.
He just described his own life and the life and career of every single one of his distinguished colleagues in the Congressional black caucus. They spend most of their adult lives begging for the money it takes to get elected from the poor people of their districts and then they are stupid enough to get caught in the Caribbean laying on the beaches with the likes of Charlie Rangel all the while taking every payoff they can stuff in their pockets. Of course getting caught doesn’t mean anything to the Dems and it would be racist to call out the Congressional black caucus. What a POS
