DENVER – Questions about the future of the Rocky Mountain News had become so common, the newspaper's staff put up a handwritten paper sign on the news desk that said, "We don't know."

On Thursday, someone wrote over it in heavy black marker: "Now we know."

Colorado's oldest newspaper, which launched in Denver in 1859, printed its last edition Friday, leaving The Denver Post as the only daily newspaper in town.

Since 2001, the News has shared business operations with The Denver Post in a joint operating agreement between Scripps and The Post's owner, MediaNews Group Inc.

Nothing. You’ve put your finger directly on the reason for their ultimate demise.

Take aviation disasters or incidents as an example of where the press usually gets so much wrong. What value does the ‘journalist’ bring to the picture? Nothing, IMO.

I can flip out a question to the ‘net and have hundreds of people who are overwhelmingly more qualified than a ‘journalist’ give comments, perform analysis and report on any aviation incident. At the mere askance of a question, we can have INFORMED, EXPERT analysis from USAF vets, actual pilots of aircraft large and small, civilian and military, of all levels and hours of experience and ratings. Sure, their grammar might not be as polished, and they might not follow all the pretty rules of the CJR. But they’ll have the facts correct from the get-go; ie, they’ll render substance over style.

All of these men and women will be more qualified to write a factual story than anyone with a ‘journalism’ degree.

[Hey, that's the same as our local fish-wrap.
I wonder if they're all like that? ]

I guess they have to. We have some really rabid liberals around here who would be writing in every day otherwise.

The only downside is that after you write your letter you get a number of mean replies. By the time you can write in again everyone has forgotten what the original letters were about.

Journalists write what the editor thinks sells, that’s all.

You can rest assured that living your life sans newspapers will be just fine... If you don’t read newspapers, don’t worry because you aren’t missing anything.

I can’t say I am sorry to see them go. It was a liberal rag whose news was agenda driven. May all media who abuse there readers have the same fate. There is a reason Fox news is the best news media. Fair and Balanced is what people expect and those who put themselves forward as balanced and provide something else do so at their peril.

Everywhere I lived as I moved around the country I got the “local” paper. The one published closest to the town I lived in.

If the only local paper was a once weekly four sheeter, I’d get it and the next best “local” paper.

If the town had two morning papers I’d get both for two months or so and there drop the one with the most moonbats.

Now I’m in a one paper town with a far left editorial board that worships the ground any Democrat walks on.

I think that newspapers or a victim of the other sources of news than the “right wingers”. The product life cycle is coming to the end. Newspapers will only survive in electronic format, just like everything else. If you don’t believe me, then go out a buy a hula hoop.

Well truth be told it’s not the biased reporting that’s killing em off. It’s Craigslist. How can they compete with free classifieds? Not a chance.

In case you haven’t been paying attention, the press isn’t doing much in the way of examining bigger Leftist gov’t, and hasn’t for quite some time.

When I moved to Colorado a while back, I thought it would be good to get the local news, so I subscribed to the Denver Post. A couple of months later, I called them to cancel my subscription.

Of course, the circulation agent asked me why I was canceling. My two-word response was, “Too liberal.”

Her response? “Well, we could change your subscription to the Rocky Mountain News; they’re not as bad.”

Wow. That said it all. Um, no, just cancel me please, kthxbye.

The threat of EMP is way over blown short of going nuclear.

If someone is willing and has the resources to go nuclear, at that point it doesn’t really matter if it is an EMP or not...
