If I squeeze the chip with a pair of Vice Grips, would it still work?

How about if you accidentally immersed it in water for an extended period of time?

Keeping a clean license is of great importance in Tennessee where, regardless of age, you must show ID when buying beer. I recommend 30 minutes soaking in very hot dishwater.

It will work just fine. It's embedded in plastic.

My company ID has one embedded. I just press my wallet against a reader by the door to get in the building. These readers are short range (inches), but that's just because it's more important that the reader be inexpensive and durable than for it to have long range. If you wanted to spend a few hundred bucks you could have a reader sensitive enough to pick up a card from a range of yards. Also, remember the federal government has the technology to pick up a signal from a 100-watt transmitter in a satellite orbiting Mars.
