Teddy bear display spurs discussion at University of Wisconsin-Platteville --(ARMING BEARS)
Wisconsin State Journal ^ | 28 feb 09 | Deborah Ziff

The disarming this month of 25 knife-wielding teddy bears by UW-Platteville police has prompted a campuswide discussion on the boundary between free expression and campus safety.

The bears were part of a student art display, propped up in neat rows on the floor of the main lobby of the UW-Platteville Art Building with sharp kitchen knives in their plush laps.

A campus police officer who was securing the building on the morning of Feb. 7 — a Saturday — was alarmed by the artwork and chose not to open the building, instead calling the chairman of the art department. Because the building is open to the public, the two agreed the knives should be removed.

Do to security concerns, University of Wisconsin is removing all cutlery from the dining halls. Students will henceforth eat with their hands.

—yep—I was especially concerned about the cafeteria also—my mother worked there thirty-some years ago, commonly wielding large spoons, knives, etc.,—lucky she didn’t go crazy with all those weapons around her—

“The right to keep and arm bears” - isn’t that in the Constitution somewhere?

Just the teddy bears getting ready to take their part in the coming showdown....

And here come the fuzz snatching their weapons.

This reminds me of when my son was in high school. It was post-Columbine, so zero tolerance for anything even close to dangerous was pretty new. A teacher- this is high school- assigned the kids to make their choice of many options on a list she wrote to illustrate medieval times... including a weapon! Guess what all the boys in the class made and brought for display in the room? Yup! Weapons! I asked her about it, but she wasn’t going to back down, maybe because she knew the boys would at least do their homework for once! She told me the room would be locked when she wasn’t there... riiiiight. Apparently she’d used the same assignment for a long time and didn’t even take the time to re-read it before handing it out one more time. Typical.

My 8th grade son just did this with his Latin project. Last year he made a small trebuchet. This year he made a Roman sword. He worked for weeks (with instruction and supervision from his Dad) welding, forging, and polishing a full-size sword. His teacher had OK'd the project, but he wasn't allowed to display it at school. He won best of show in the local competition, but at the awards banquet he'll have to display photos on a poster rather than the real article. I'm frankly surprised the teacher approved it, but she's a mother of a teenage son and we know her well enough through Scouts. I guess she understands how normal boys behave and found a way to work the issue. She's alright in my book.

Have all the adults left the room? Political Correctness is creating an insane society. Knives!!! Anyone with a rock and a piece of iron can make a knife in a couple of hours. They are easy to conceal and can be bought at the local drug, convenience, hardware, dollar,or big box store.

This is insanity, and I do not mean that as hyperbole.

The leadership class is terrified. They know what is coming. One sign that the explosion is near will be the sudden retirement of long time legislatures. They have their pensions and want to drop out of sight and as they hope out of mind.
