U.S. families feel sting of Mexico's drug violence
CNN ^ | Feb. 28, 2009 | Ismael Estrada

Jose Molinar knew something wasn't right. He hadn't heard from his wife for a few hours, which was not sitting well with him.

Marisella Molinar worked as a secretary for a top prosecutor in Juarez... She was employed in the office for more than 10 years and though she lived across the border in El Paso, Texas, with her husband, she drove about 20 minutes over the Juarez-El Paso border every day.

Her passenger, Jesus Huerta Yedra, was a target of the cartels that day.... One shot hit Marisella Molinar, a mother of two and proud grandmother, in the chest, killing her instantly.

"She wasn't involved, she didn't have anything to do with this!" said Jose Molinar in a recent interview with CNN.

The violence generated by the war of the drug cartels for control of drug routes translated last year into some 6,000 killings. More than 1,600 of them occurred in Juarez, three times more than the most murderous city in the United States. This year, in two months, the body count in Juarez is 400.

At the city's only morgue, bodies are piling up. The mayor said there are far too many dead for the small facility to handle. The majority of the dead are unidentified members of the cartels. Just last week, the mayor said, 50 corpses were buried in mass graves because no one claimed the bodies.

Officials from both sides of the border said the drug war may go on for years. Beheadings, bodies riddled with gunfire and blood-stained streets will continue daily, they said.

"It's not going to be won quickly," said Enrique Torres, a spokesman for the Mexican government, " We know the monster is big, but we don't have an idea of how big it is."

It goes far beyond drugs at this point. According to the reporter that was on with Glenn Beck the other day these “drug” cartels are shaking down teachers for their Christmas bonus chacks and threatening to kill the children if they don’t get the money.

Lots of innocent people are being killed as a result of this drug war and its obvious consequences, but it’s worth it!

Absolutely. Human smuggling and holding them for ransom in the USA is another lucrative pass time of these thugs.

“Arpaio also said that illegal immigration, not drug cartels, is the reason the Valley is considered the “kidnapping capital” of the U.S.”

No, it’s not worth it and it’s not all about drugs.

I suspect drug money has already purchased American politicians at the highest level. Witness not one step is being taken to control the borders and prevent the invasion. Further, there is a movement sweeping our states to grant in state tuition to illegals. This of course will act as part of the magnet.

Yes, we’ve suspected that for some time, haven’t we. Both Sanford and Madoff have been named as doing business with the cartels and they owned plenty of politicians. I’m sure there are more...like Carlos Slim.

With many politicians making decisions that are clearly counterintuitive to the welfare of U.S. citizens who are their constituents, I am coming to believe that this suspicion is well founded.

There’s no other conclusion to come to.

I have been puzzling over this for some time and that’s the only thing that makes sense.

AuntB, could you post a couple of links you had sometime ago of pix showing innocent and not so innocent folks having been killed? Some of that needs to be saved not as a kind of voyeurism but a harsh reminder of what this is all about. I think there’s some cynical people here that needs to be reminded on occasion.

I did not think a sarcasm tag was necessary on my post, certainly not to anyone familiar with my position on the subject.

No, no, the reply was not to you personally at all, like a lot of us, it’s like shouting in the wind out of frustration, of little use but it feels good! And we get to blast out our opinion. No offense whatsoever.
