CINCINNATI (AP) -- A trash-hauling company serving parts of Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana says an economy down in the dumps has meant a decline in garbage.
Rumpke Consolidated Companies Inc. says waste collections are down 10 to 15 percent. At Rumpke headquarters in suburban Cincinnati, spokeswoman Amanda Pratt says manufacturing has seen cutbacks and residents are buying less, so there isn't as much trash at the curb.
The company says its business also has been hurt by a slide in commodities prices. Chief financial officer Phil Wehrman says Rumpke could sell recycled cardboard and newspapers for $130 per ton last summer, but those materials now go for around $25 per ton.
Rumpke serves 62 municipalities in its three-state region.
