It was not possible for Reagan to get a died in the wool prolifer through the Senate.
Yes, he could have done a bit better, but he did not deserve the bitter attacks from the radical prolifers who do not play the political game very well.
I recall that the attack was directed primarily, at the time, against Colin Powell, not a SCOTUS appointment.

There was no excuse for O’Connor; he went with her because of her ovaries, not her legal opinions, which are largely nugatory.
