Gordon Brown sparked fury today by awarding an honorary knighthood to U.S. senator Edward Kennedy, who has been accused in the past of being an IRA sympathiser.
Conservative MPs and Peers condemned as 'inappropriate' the decision to make a man closely linked to the Irish nationalist movement a 'Sir'.
Senior British politicians also expressed unease at honouring the Democrat who was embroiled in controversy when he was involved in an infamous car accident on Chappaquiddick Island in 1969 in which a young woman was killed.

Seems the Brits are no more happy about this than posters on FR are. Some of the comments are priceless.

Sir Ted Carlyle of Crash.Sir Elton John. Nobel Peace Prize recipient Yasser Arafat. It's all becoming meaningless.

That is closer to the truth than I think you wanted to be.
Notice in the Kennedy thing, the MPs object to his knighthood based on his close linkage to Irish Nationalism. No mention of all of the other legal and moral flaws that surround this mess of a human being. It is as if the past ceased to exist for this scumbag.

All I can guess is that Ted's consumption of Chivas Regal, a U.K. product, is so voluminous that it probably makes up a significant portion of British GDP every year.
When does the high falooting award arrive at Hyannisport from Mexico for Ted's contribution to the destruction of America's borders back in the 60s with his toxic immigration bill?

Let’s put Sir Ted in some armor, give him a horse and lance, point him at a windmill and see what he does.

hell be the first knight to turn a car into a submarineI'll never understand the American (some) attitude regarding the Kennedys as being some kind of royalty. It's really quite sickening. Camelot indeed. Everytime I hear that term, I feel like I'm going to vomit.

A “knighthood’ in British slang is a condom. Fitting!
