Creation: antidote for depression

by Tas Walker

‘Now I realize why I’ve been depressed for so long’, a man with dishevelled hair, baggy clothes and unkempt beard told me after a meeting one evening. He said he had always accepted evolution was a fact. That night he realized that this evolutionary belief was the reason for his dark despair and feeling of emptiness....

obsession
Psychiatry ‘Recurrent & persistent thoughts, impulses, or images (that are perceived) … as intrusive and inappropriate and cause marked anxiety or distress’
Obsessions are
1. Recurrent & persistent thoughts, impulses, or images–TII, that are perceived as intrusive and inappropriate and cause marked anxiety or distress
2. Or that are not simply excessive reponses to genuine real-life problems

Without a Creator, life is meaningless.

We are then no more than a chance of nothing, created by nothing, apparently created out of nothing and created for no purpose whatsoever and there is no reason for any morality at all. Our existence would be nothing more than chance. We’re born. we live. we die. and that is all.

How utterly hopeless.

I can’t believe that.

I’ve seen and know the Creator

It’s good to see your work, too. :-)

You might know by now that I’m a strict monotheist but a strong believer (Gentile studying Judaism). The article that you posted is a good argument against Atheism, which leads to various kinds of New Age habits for most. I won’t personally argue with or otherwise be contrary with decided Atheists, but it’s healthier to avoid distancing oneself further from G-d, IMO.

You would not have found a more devout Christian than my grandmother. She also suffered from depression. For a great many people, It has nothing to do with their attitude or belief system. It’s a disorder of brain chemistry that’s treatable with medication.

I am a suicide survivor (as an evolutionist), who was dramatically affected for the better when I became a creationist. So I absolutely endorse the gist of this article. It’s hard to be depressed when you recognize the reality that there is a God and He cares about you.

You are right that some depression has a chemical/hormonal link. But not all. Obviously this article refers to the latter, not the former.

woollyone: “Without a Creator, life is meaningless.”

Agreed. Most people don’t give serious thought to it, but a life without God is ultimately meaningless. No matter what you do, it has no meaning outside of your own selfish existence. No matter how you strive, whatever you build or create, it all comes to nothing in the end. Even the human race, without God, is hopelessly doomed, a dead end. Whether you or anyone else lives or dies, it matters not.

Conservatives who don’t believe in God and don’t respect Christians should at least give some serious thought as to whether or not Christianity is, on the whole, a social good or a social bad. In my opinion, the answer is obvious.

If Christianity is a social good, then it at least deserves respect and support from non-believing conservatives. Most conservatives used to understand this. Unfortunately, many people, even FReepers, are now hostile to Christianity (to the detriment of society).

kms61: “It’s a disorder of brain chemistry that’s treatable with medication.”

I find it very interesting how Christ healed people. In some cases, the illness was attributed to demons. In other cases, no demons were involved—the problems were purely physical. Why? I believe that’s the difference you mention in your post. With some, it may be spiritual. With others, it may be physical.

Ignoring for the moment whether evolution is true or not, no one can seriously dispute that 1) its implications are profoundly depressing for human beings, and 2) the Left loves the doctrine, because it reduces man to insignificance and allows the State to do anything with people it pleases. That's the real reason they want it crammed into the minds of the young; it is not "basic science" at all, and most people, even in scientific fields like medicine, have no need to know much about it.

In contrast, Christianity is 1) profoundly positive and conducive to joy, and 2) the only reliable basis for free economic and political systems.
