By MICHAEL J. BOSKIN It's hard not to see the continued sell-off on Wall Street and the growing fear on Main Street as a product, at least in part, of the realization that our new president's policies are designed to radically re-engineer the market-based U.S. economy, not just mitigate the recession and financial crisis.
The illusion that Barack Obama will lead from the economic center has quickly come to an end. Instead of combining the best policies of past Democratic presidents -- John Kennedy on taxes, Bill Clinton on welfare reform and a balanced budget, for instance -- President Obama is returning to Jimmy Carter's higher taxes and Mr. Clinton's draconian defense drawdown.
Mr. Obama's $3.6 trillion budget blueprint, by his own admission, redefines the role of government in our economy and society. The budget more than doubles the national debt held by the public, adding more to the debt than all previous presidents -- from George Washington to George W. Bush -- combined. It reduces defense spending to a level not sustained since the dangerous days before World War II, while increasing nondefense spending (relative to GDP) to the highest level in U.S. history. And it would raise taxes to historically high levels (again, relative to GDP). And all of this before addressing the impending explosion in Social Security and Medicare costs.

Obama has all but destroyed the US in just six weeks, cant wait to see what he will do to us in the next six.
My only reservation is that he says a carbon tax would be better than cap and trade.
We really can’t afford either one.
What the hell. Taxed for heating your house so your family doesn’t freeze to death? Taxed for driving to work?
We don’t need ANY of this nonsense, which will only worsen this coming depression.
I can pretty much say that they'll either discount it or justify it. Leftists right now are like a kid who thinks he's about to inherit a candy store, so their reasoning ability on the matter is nil.
And...
Forget the Dow, Dear Leader 0’s socialistic radicalism is killing AMERICA.
I don’t think Obama even wants to “remake” the United States into a socialist state.
I think he wants to KILL all the white people in America, through economic chaos, freezing, starving, terrorist attack, etc.—and is willing to see a lot of black people die, too, if that’s what it takes.
Just as he is happy to see most black pregnancies end in murder, just as long as white babies are murdered, too.
I agree.
He's been quite busy, hasn't he? Jimmy Carter (spit) must be jealous, it took him a few years to do half the damage that Bambi is going to do within the next few months. This guy is in one heck of a hurry.
If a white rock star was to proclaim on national TV that Obama hates white people if he’d get an interview with Barbara Walters and praised for his courage and insight like Kayne west was when he accused GWB as a racist?
Get as much socialism done in the first six months as you can, gives his regime three and a half years to get the American voter to accept theses policies.
The average voter forgets all promises and bad politics within a year, thus his need for speed in getting his policies into law. ;-)
They'll probably re-elect the guy.
Not if I have anything to do with it. I have redoubled my commitment to get republicans elected to both houses in all upcoming elections. This commitment involves both state and national elections. Im retired and thus I have many hours free to email, snail mail, go door to door and work at my local Republican clearing house.
This is a quote from a column on the Salemweb.com, Political Discussions/ entitled January 21, 2009. http://www.salemweb.com/discus/messages/15147/35666.html?1236386526
“Perhaps the little chappies in the tin hats can explain their solution as to how we dig our way out of little W’s hole. The negro has been president for less than 7 weeks!
May be a bit difficult as we still have not heard about the legislative strategy for the Fairness doctrine. Any hearings scheduled?
Got a list of co-sponsors? - Any schedule for a vote on the legislative calendar? ~ William Conant”
As you can see, the Liberal mind is still alive (or dead) in Massachusettes.
If anyone cares to reply to this guy, I’d love it.
Yep, and it's no accident -- it's all by design.
