First, Arthur Santa-Maria called Bank of America to ask how to check the balance of his new unemployment benefits debit card. The bank charged him 50 cents.

He chose not to complain. That would have cost another 50 cents.

So he took out some of the money and then decided to pull out the rest. But that made two withdrawals on the same day, and that was $1.50.

Not only is it taxed, but a 1.50 to make a withdrawal, there is no fee to get money off an access card...whats wrong here?

I call Bravo Sierra! The Texas Unemployment Commission uses Chase Bank for debit cards, not Bank of America.

"I just see banks trying to make that 50 cents or a buck and a half when I should be given the service for free."

Right.

Davis was given a MasterCard issued through Central Bank of Jefferson City and recently paid $6 to make two $40 withdrawals.

I'm guessing she used her card at an ATM not in the Central Banks network and was assessed a $2.50 fee each time for not using a network ATM. Add a 50 cent transaction fee and you get $6.00. This is not all that unusual.

They should be able to call the bank and have a teller deliver the money.

Right.

In his own inarticulate way, he was making an anti-monopolistic abuse protest. Or are you aware of a banking alternative that he is overlooking?

This just plain sucks.

How the hell is Arthur supposed to buy his lottery tickets, his cigarettes, and his beer if he keeps getting nickeled and dimed to death?

Headline: Many jobless have to pay fees to get unemployment money

Content:

The banks say their programs offer convenience. They also provide at least one way to tap the money at no charge, such as using a single free withdrawal to get all the cash at once from a bank teller.
Content:
Kenna Gortler, a laid-off paper mill worker in Oregon, said her union is advising members to avoid the debit cards and sign up to get their benefits through direct deposit.

Bottom line: The banks are giving the taxpayers a freebie by processing the payments for nothing, in exchange for the opportunity to profit from stupidity.

Bottom line: Journalists are morons who fill the news hole caterwauling about nothing.

Personally I think the banks should put in a word to their lobbyist so that they can have legislation enacted were people will be forced to make permanent deposits into the banks coffers.

Yea right, give those gubmnt officials your bank information. That way if they or you make a mistake which they won’t find for 2 years, they can instantly recover the whole amount without your consent.
