Because he cared, war dead get the respect they're due

Eric Besvold missed the HBO premiere of "Taking Chance" a few weeks ago, but he hopes to catch it on DVD.

Besvold, 35, is drawn to the true story of Marine Lt. Col. Michael Strobl, who escorts the body of 19-year-old Lance Cpl. Chance Phelps, killed in Iraq, home to Dubois, Wyo. Besvold has traveled much the same road.

In June 2006, Besvold, a St. Paul resident who works on the baggage ramp for Northwest Airlines, was jolted by what he saw one afternoon. After the normal sea of luggage down the conveyer belt came a military casket, "like just another piece of freight." He believed there was nothing intentional about the abandonment of military procedures guaranteeing respectful handling of soldiers' remains. "No one knew anymore," he said. "There hasn't been a war in a long time."

Still, he thought, it wasn't right.....

Saw it, good movie.

My wife and I on “date night” friday went and saw Slumdog millionaire - I have never been to a movie where no-one, and I mean no-one left when the credits started rolling. Everyone waited until the end. Good movie. I did not think I would like it but, it was good.

Because of the efforts of Eric Besvold, Northwest Airlines now uses this special cart, featuring magnetic decals for the service branches, to transport the caskets of war dead arriving in the Twin Cities. PHOTO BY STEVE REDESKE

Caption for the picture.

Good read. Thanks.

A local DJ recommended the movie. It was great and so was Bacon!

When I was in the service , (Air Force 1st Lt)I was called to the Command Post. A Marine LtCol from the Dallas Recruiting Office was waiting for me. He was going to make the Notification Call on my Chief Master Sgt.

Sgt Castillo's son had died at Khe Sahn and his instructions were very specific. He stated, "Because I'm Hispanic my death will be a great blow on my mother. Tell my father out of view of my Mom. Then take Dad a priest, and Doctor to make the notification to my Mom."

I called Sgt Castillo and had a cup of coffee with the Col. I asked if this procedure was routine. He said no death notification is routine and he thanked me for my help in this circumstance.

I'll never forget when Sgt Castillo entered the command post. He was smiling at me and then as he looked over my shoulder he saw the Marine and it was like he had walked into a glass wall! I gave him a big hug and then we proceeded.

Mrs Castillo was a charming Hispanic lady who would come to bowling alley to cheer for Sgt Castillo and Me. She had shiny black hair and sparkling brown eyes. After the funeral I met her one last time before they moved to San Antonio because Sgt Castillo had put in his retirement papers. Her hair was shock white and the wrikles and dark circles under the eyes showed that she had aged 50 years in a fortnight!

What a wonderful thing to do. I saw ‘Taking Chance’ while I was on dialysis and I cried throughout the whole thing. People must have wondered what in heck was going on with me. I highly recommend it, and I don’t recommend a lot of movies.

One has to wonder if the Star Tribune will print the stories about soldiers accompanying coffins from the upcoming war in the Sudan which will be Obama’s war. The Sickle and Star Tribune is, of course, a very lefty paper and enjoys referring to Iraq as Bush’s war.

To counter a major recession/depression, Dim Presidents have a habit of provoking wars to get the country out of debt. Obama is likely to use Darfur as the reason for entering into a conflict with Al Qaeda and its lot in the Sudan; it’s a popular cause with lefties and would serve as a means of mobilizing his proposed brown shirt brigades, re-energize GM by having them build tanks, etc., a perfect answer for a Dim President who seems to have no idea how to put both hands on his own donkey.

What a wonderful American......God bless Eric Besvold. We watched “Taking Chance” tonight and I cried so hard....it was a wonderful, moving and revealing movie. Things that I never knew as to how these hero’s are treated with the uttmost respect, even in death. Kevin Bacon was magnificent and it’s a movie I’ll never forget. I highly recommend it.

I watched “Taking Chance” just last night. It was terrific.

I especially liked the refusal to desecrate a marine uniform for the airport fascists.

Eric Besvold gets an “A” for effort but he needs to put those emblems in the correct order; Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard.
