I think because they were expecting the opposite result.
12 Million plus votes and 86% prefer to keep the motto.
This is how the Left works.
When they come up with an idea that might not be popular, they have their media clowns do some polls, then some scholarly articles on why this is a good idea, and eventually Congress passes some law.
They're just paving the way. It's coming.
Unfortunately, "In God we trust" will probably be replaced with "Allah Akbar".
