Many surprised by event billed as diversity presentation
Alveda King speaks about abortion Tuesday in Warriner
Some students at Alveda King's speech Tuesday night did not expect a strictly literal interpretation of the advertised "life affirming choices" speech.
The niece of Dr. Martin Luther King spoke out strongly against abortion at her "Can the Dream Survive?" presentation in Warriner Hall's Plachta Auditorium. Some students were surprised to learn that was the topic of her lecture. Several of the about 650-person audience walked out.
"I felt a little misled personally," said Flint senior Detrone Turner, who said he thought the speech was going to be about increasing diversity.
Sponsored by The Student Budget Allocation Committee, The Office for Institutional Diversity and Students For Life, King presented a PowerPoint called "Can the Dream Survive If the Kids Are Dead?"
"That whole adding in 'can the dream survive if the kids were dead' was an aspect that I wasn't expecting," Turner said. "It kind of caught me off guard."
Speaking about abortion, King linked the Civil Rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s to her views on abortion.
She spoke briefly of her father, A.D. King, and her uncle, Martin Luther King Jr., who fought to end segregation in the early 1950s, before segueing into her own family's experience with abortion.
A mother of several children, King admitted she had two abortions herself, but that she was tricked into the procedures. The doctor who performed her first abortion did not tell her that she was pregnant.
"I was pregnant and he didn't tell me. It was illegal. It was not 1973. Roe v. Wade had not passed," she said. "Really, I was pregnant (and) he didn't tell me."
The situation was similar for her second abortion.
"We wanted to bring a speaker who would be able to talk about things that aren't talked about a lot. To bring some issues that we don't hear a lot," said Students For Life president and Muskegon senior Sean Nolan.
"I think (the) mark of success for our event is that a fair number of people got up and left during her talk," he said. "I think it's good that we probably annoyed people, irritated people,"
Turner, who stayed throughout the entire presentation, said he thought the lecture's content was questionable, but enjoyable to watch.
"I felt some of the information could have been a little skewed, but all in all it was good, it was entertaining."
The woman is lying. She wants us to believe that some doctor never told her she was pregnant but then performed an abortion - twice!!
Next she'll claim she didn't know where babies came from.

I went on the priests for life site and found her testimony. She went to the doctor after getting pregnant again soon after having her first child. Apparently she was on the table and was told only “you don't need another baby” and he proceeded to do the D & C without giving her a chance to digest what he just said. As for the second abortion, the author of the article is inaccurate when they say that it was similar to the first one. She admitted that she had the abortion due to her personality change after the first one. She was a divorcee and an avid pro choicer.
Be very cautious when reading these articles because they tend to be skewed to make people look bad.
As for her first abortion, she was probably young and stupid and just basically would not speak up for herself when it came to the doctor. We all tend to give doctor's too much pull in our lives, just imagine being a young naive person on top of that.
It was.
If you abort all your kids you are not going to be around a 100 years. And the world will be less diverse.
I take it they no longer teach logic in Flint.
So how many of 650 kids walked out. Several?
And that drives the headline, not the content of the speech.

Sorry but I don’t believe her.
You are not getting the news that you are pregnant while you are in the OR lying flat on your back and instantly the doctor is scrubbed and performing the abortion. When you get a D & C you have preparation for it, you sign papers, you don’t eat for a number of hours before the procedure.
Similiarly, anyone who is old enough to have one abortion, get married, get divorced and get pregnant again - they’re old enough to know they’re pregnant and they’re getting another abortion.
She wants to blame some doctor and some mysterious personality change rather than take responsibility for her actions.
I can understand when someone is young and vulnerable. I can understand when someone feels she has no choice. I can’t understand someone giving lectures on this topic and saying she had no responsibility for her actions.
p.s. Thank you for checking further about her story. You are correct to be cautious when reading these articles - actually reading any article in the main stream press.
Maybe she is having a hard time accepting full responsibility for the abortions, considering that it is a truly heinous act. I would have a hard time admitting that to myself as well. She is trying to make up for what she has done by making a difference and stopping other people from making the same choice.
She isn't lecturing people to talk down to them, she is trying to wake people up. She is tired of seeing innocent babies wiped out, and she just wants the genocide to stop. Is that so wrong? And again, if you want to learn more about her, research her yourself, don't rely on the information provided in this article alone.
More black than white babies are aborted. Margaret Sanger (Planned Parenthood) believed blacks were subhuman. Wake up! You stupid pro-abortion fools!

Unfortunately, I can tell you from firsthand experience that you are wrong on everything above, with the exception of the paperwork--and years ago, I'm willing to bet that the paperwork was, at best, slipshod.

I didn't realize she's be speaking in Flint, I'd love to have gone and seen her. This gets me, and apparently riled many other freepers:

Abortion is the number one killer of African Americans. How does it increase diversity, exactly?
From stories I have heard, back in the days when abortions were illegal it was a big deal to find the doctor and then get an appointment. It was all very hush-hush but the girl and the mother both knew exactly what the options were and what the goal might be. For her to claim she had no idea of that option is hard to believe.
Let’s say she was blindsided by her first abortion, the second abortion was a surprise too?
She claims no responsibility for her choices and we’re fine with that? I wonder why? Because she is black? MLK’s niece?

What does that have to do with what I snipped from your comment? I made no comment whatsoever about absolving her of responsibility for her choices. None. I pointed out that what you stated, about what actually occurs in an abortion clinic (apart from murder) is wrong.
One other thing, not directed at you but just a statement in general: There have been a few assertions on this thread that abortion, in 1971 and before, was illegal. Not so. RvW in 1973 made abortion legal at the national level. Prior to that, abortion was legal in many areas of the country. I have seen nothing, no evidence so far, that shows that King's abortions were illegal. The legal standing, to me, does not at all alter the absolute immorality of abortion. It does, however, change the circumstances of the procurement. An abortionist performing illegal procedures would go above and beyond to make certain that the woman knew what was going on--in fact, I can't for a second believe that such a murder didn't take place at the direct and insistent request of the mother.
I can envision a doctor, "practicing medicine" in a setting in which abortion is legal, making life and death decisions without any help from the woman with her legs in the stirrups. That's exactly the kind of ego abortionists have. They don't discuss. They don't answer questions. I know of one personally who doesn't even allow for questions to be asked. They're monsters.
As for King, I am in no position to sit in judgment of her, but I will say this: Regardless of the circumstances surrounding her abortions, for many, many years now she has been a tireless advocate for the unborn. And yes, in that regard, it does make a difference that she's black. I can't think of one single black female pro-lifer that is as high-profile as she is. In fact, I can't think of one other slightly well known black female pro-lifer. Think of what that means to the black community.
