Help Wanted: Two Million Jobs Open Across Range of Industries

Help wanted: pharmacists, engineers and nurses. Believe it or not, even some banks are hiring, at least for their technology teams.

While the recession has claimed 4.4 million jobs, the economy has created others, many of them for highly trained and specialized professionals. More than 2 million jobs openings now exist across a range of industries, according to government data.

Job seekers beware, though. An average of nearly five people are competing for each opening. That's up sharply from a ratio of less than 2-to-1 in December 2007, when the recession was just starting and nearly 4 million openings existed.

Human resources executives say companies that are hiring are benefiting from a top-notch talent pool as applications pour in from a larger base of job seekers. The number of unemployed Americans has soared, to 12.5 million last month, from 7 million when the recession began.

Broadly, jobs are being added in education, health care and the federal government, the Labor Department said, with the government adding 9,000 new jobs last month alone.

The nurse shortage won’t be resolved any time soon unless we raid the Philippines. The problem is poor pay and being over worked. And if it’s bad now, just wait until Obama and his merry bunch socialists give us the change we don’t need and never wanted by giving us socialized health care. Why would anyone want to go into nursing then?

My wife a CCU RN only has 4 years to go for retirement we get calls from recruiters about once a week of job offers around the country for nurses. the hospital she works at has a shortage of trained nurses which results in working extra shifts but make for a stressful day. Cant wait till she retires.

Poor pay? In my area, nurses are starting at $65K. I’d be okay with that.

I respectfully disagree, the nurse shortage will be resolved once enough people are put out of work and healthcare has been nationalized.

When my job is gone in health insurance I'll be dusting off my license and going back to bedside care and I know others will be following, disease managers, case managers, medical review nurses, etc. Once zero puts enough people out of work you'll see a lot fewer nursing ads. :(

... Broadly, jobs are being added in education, health care and the federal government ...
In other words, government or government dependent sectors. Hardly good news.
