Wait until Obozo increases the cost of electricity by 500%. LOL!
If you do the math it doesn't cost much to charge it.
220vRMS X 20 A = 1.640 K-W
(1.640 K-W) X (8 hour charge time) X ($.10/K-W-Hour) = $1.32 to charge it, Not bad.
Hey! That will make wind and Solar viable price wise!
8 hr charge time? 40 mi range?
Feel free to buy one. Not me.
Apparently the Prius doesn’t make sense anymore either. Sales have plummeted while the sales of trucks and SUVs has risen slightly.
A former student of mine, after graduation, was working on that thing. When I was in town, he invited me over for a test drive. Turns out we couldn’t leave the parking lot because “it’s already been driven today, needs to recharge, and we don’t want to get stranded”.
At least a plug-in hybrid can be gassed up when the battery is down.
a green car needs to be built from alloys, plastics, and chemicals.
They should be made with plywood and waxed paper. The batteries could be made from pickle buckets.
Except for the power plant, this pretty well describes the Yugo.
Heyup
'Does GM's Volt Make Sense?'Uh .. No (duh).
Plugging your car in every night to charge the battery will give you a $6,000 monthly electric bill and after two months break the electric meter from over use, it would spin like a top on LSD. (semi kidding) But 'series', I'm in IL and my electric bill would be ridiculously high and I'm pretty sure in states like CA and NY it would be too.
So again NO and with a big DUH!
OH and I heard yesterday that when the engine kicks in instead of the battery your top speed is 40 MPH which will make you road kill as that semi behind you is doing 75 mph.
So Double NO and double BIG -- DUH!!
And where do we get the electricity to charge its batteries with Obambi’s vow to close down the coal industry and anti-nuke power bias?
And now congress wants to mandate a 15-20% ethanol content for gasoline. When the 10% mix was mandated I got a 10% DECREASE in the mileage of my car. Just like Congress to demand more mileage while demanding a fuel that will deliver less mileage than pure gasoline.
Where did you find the 20A?
The Tesla requires a high amperage connection.
Ironically if we endorsed nuclear power more then the Volt concept would be even more sound. As Newt Gingrich explained, nuclear plants produce full capacity around the clock. The non-peak hours (at night) are the best time to plug in an electric car, since commuters don't generally use them at night anyway. But Obama doesn't want to develop nuclear power, or for that matter any "non-renewable" power source.
Not only are we not developing Nuclear Power, We are taking existing plants OFF line.
We have hundreds and hundreds of Golf carts at work.
Not a one runs off batteries. I wonder why? Hmmmm?
It goes 40 miles on a charge? Good bye trips to Grandma.
BTW: GM VP Lauccckner
Three cees and a kay? Is he from the Department of Redundancy Department?
Ummm..efficiency?
No, actually. Even counting for transmission losses and such, the overall efficiency of a plug-in electric car is probably better than that of an internal combustion engine, due to the fact that large power plants operate at a much higher efficiency than a car does.
The wonderful advantage of oil-based transportation is that you can very conveniently pack a tremendous amount of energy into a very small volume; and the storage medium itself is very stable and safe, and operates well over a very wide range of temperature.
To be successful, any attempt to replace oil-based internal combustion engines has got to match up well in terms of convenience and energy density. In their current form, electric cars don't really do that very well.
Consider, for example, a day ski trip here in Colorado. Even if you left home with a full charge, the gasoline half of the "hybrid" system would end up doing most of the work.
