Does GM's Volt Make Sense?
Technology Review (MIT) ^ | 4 Mar 2009 | Kevin Bullis

Posted on 03/10/2009 6:05:49 AM PDT by docbnj

GM is defending its design for the Volt plug-in hybrid vehicle after a study out of Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) slammed the design, saying that it's not economical. (Plug-ins are hybrids with batteries that can be recharged by plugging them in.) *** [GM VP Lauccckner] says that the study should have accounted for the tax credits for plug-in hybrids available through the stimulus bill. He implies that these credits, along with cheaper batteries, will make the Volt affordable. But if the Volt relies on government incentives to be economically viable, is it really economically viable?

The Volt is a car designed by pressure from California environmentalists. The waste and impracticality which the project illustrates betrays the character of top management at this failing, former giant of industry.

Good...more coal-fired electricity generation needed to power these.

Electric cars do make sense, but who can afford them? And will obama start the country down the nuclear powerplant path? I think not!!

What?! C’mon, get with the program, this is FR. The union forced them to do it. Management is smart, attractive, and worth every billion they can get. The union forced management to make horrible decisions.

The irony is the fact a “green car” needs to be built from alloys, plastics, and chemicals.

IMHO the VOLT is the stupidest idea to come down the pike in a long time.

Where do the lead-acid batteries go after about five years?

When it costs 20K and has a 400 mi range on a 5 min charge for 40 bucks, it will make sense.

So where does our government think electricity comes from? A wall socket? Biden says no more coal mining. Obama is against it too. Where are they going to get the electricity? And with Cap & Trade. It will be cheaper to buy gas than use electricity. These people are such douche bags.

I’ve often wondered why the previous electric cars didn’t have a convenient house type plug you could easily recharge at home.

Electric vehicles are out of the question in my neck of the woods because of the cold. I think they could be a good idea if the parasite gypsy thieves in the industry looked out for the consumers interest a little more.

Think how great it would be if you could recharge off the grid from the solar panels on your roof. But Noooooo...

...tptb just want to substitute one kind of dependence for a newer one.

“Does GM’s Volt Make Sense?”

No.
It’s one more vehicle that nobody will buy.
If they put out vehicles that looked nice, were quality work, didn’t need major repairs every two week or less, and didn’t have ‘workers’ getting paid 75$ an hour to sit and pick their noses, there likely wouldn’t be a problem in Detroit.
Before the UAW nitpickers get here and sing “Arise ye russian people”, yes I am slightly generalising.
But only slightly!

There’s a reason why cars have been powered by oil derivatives since the 1930’s. Anyone figure that out yet?

What’s going to generate the electricity that these cars will plug into? Windmills? Only if the windmills have a power grid created by the government.

They should be made with plywood and waxed paper. The batteries could be made from pickle buckets.
