Union Elections Too Important For Secret Ballots

Look, if you want to have the secret ballot in elections for President of the United States, that’s OK. I mean, what does a president decide, after all? But a unionization election? Now there’s something really important. It’s better to do away with the secret ballot there.

That in essence was the argument of a union official in favor of permitting secret ballots to be denied in unionization elections, as would potentially be the case under the Orwellian-named “Employee Free Choice Act” introduced in Congress today. Stephen Lerner of the SEIU was the official in question. He made his argument on this afternoon’s Hardball . . .

Mark, this one really hits home with me: I was a union member for 16 years as a missile inspector at Vandenberg Air Force Base (the only woman in my group of 26, hence my screen name). I had no choice in the matter, as we were an agency shop.

Believe me, while most of our local leaders were pretty good guys with whom we worked side by side, the union leadership at the national level cared NOTHING for rank and file. Most of our membership was comprised of technicians and inspectors, many of whom were retired military people, and mostly quite conservative.

Try this one on for size: our international president, the late and unlamented William Winpisinger, actually endorsed (of all people) the Rev'rund Jackson for President of the United States at the 1988 Democratic National Convention. The local membership was outraged. So much for looking out for our interests.

I was sure this was going to be a satire. How far have we fallen where people can say this with a straight face?

Foxnews had this report this evening.

Note the intimidation going on by union members in the hall. They are illustrating the points those against the bill are trying to make.
