Embracing President Barack Obama's call for national service, lawmakers on Wednesday moved ahead with a plan to expand the country's AmeriCorps program and boost volunteer opportunities for students and seniors.
The House could vote as early as next week on a bill to increase AmeriCorps to 250,000 positions from the current 75,000 and create a new service corps in low-income communities focusing on education, clean energy, health and services for veterans.
