Lawmakers move to expand service opportunities (AmeriCorps goes from 75K to 250K members)

Why does the gov't (read taxpayers) have to expand service volunteer opportunities?

Why can't these people just go out and volunteer themselves? Also, if they're volunteers, why do taxpayers have to pay a single dime?

Hmm, looks like the Americorp grew under Bush. At least he didn’t expand it to 200,000 by 2009 like McCain wanted him to.

Go to the gov websites for bills & share your enthusiasm (be nice) — they can find you if they want. But we don’t need to be spending $1.1B for anything now. Thank you.

Obama’s proposed budget for next year calls for more than $1.1 billion for national service programs.

The House bill is H.R. 1388.
The Senate bill is S.277.
